I just finished watching Souri to yobanai de"Farewell Mr. Premier", an older series from 1997 and it was just a lot of fun.
Usually I find Tamura Masakazu to be a bit annoying, but he was such a perfect fit here... a career politician, completely unfit for the office of the Prime Minister, with but one dream. That being, not to set the record for the shortest time in office before the Diet got together and kicked him out.
Honami Suzuki is fabulous as the beautiful, rich, young, trophy wife of the Premier.
And Mayu Tsuruta as the sweet, slack jawed, honest but really really simple new maid is wonderful.
And yeah, if the Bush White House makes you want to scream, this show will give you a heck of a laugh.
Um, I also watched this series within the last month. I agree with everything you wrote about this series. However, I felt a little disappointed after completing it. Why? It's because my expectations were so high: not only did it have a stellar cast (besides the actors you mentioned, it also had two wonderful character actors--Keiko Toda and Masahiko Nishimura), it was also scripted by Koki Mitani. I am a great admirer of Mitani as a scriptwriter--he has penned some of the most clever, witty, and entertaining dorama and theatrical movies I have ever seen--but this series felt a little uneven to me. Some of the episodes (like the meteorite one) were superb satire, but some of the plotlines were not as strong. I guess I have come to expect everything created by Mitani to be outstanding--this turned out to be merely good. Which makes Farewell, Mr. Premier better than most of the dorama put out there in recent years.
Also within the last month, I watched:
Ue o Muite Aruko (Walking on Up/Look on the Bright Side), a 1994 comedy starring Hikaru Nishida as a young woman working at a TV station who desperately wants to produce dorama but instead is assigned to a news show. For what it is--lightweight, not-to-be-taken-seriously entertainment--it is amusing and competently done.
Shokutaku kara Ai o Komete (From the Dining Room with Love), a 1998 series starring Chikako Kaku and Takeshi Naito as a couple going through marital problems. Part comedy, part drama it tries to do too much. There are so many subplots, most of which are not resolved, a lot of forced situations, and a rushed ending that is typical of a lot of dorama.

in the middle of Shota no Sushi... and the harem sub-plot is creeping in.
im wondering if at some point, one of the episodes has him getting his own set of knives.

A very pleasant series with perhaps a little too much slapstick. Furuta Shinta was as usual excellent with his comic timing. I first saw him in Star No Koi and it seemed he was almost the same character in Haruka.
Hirayama Aya. What can I say. Another superb beauty.
I liked it, though it was cartoonish at times. And the ending was rather abrupt and unsatisfying... I almost felt cheated somehow.

Just watched Ep 1 of "My Boss, My Hero." I really liked it. Very hilarious and original.
Not all that original. It's a remake of a Korean movie. There's also the sequal, "My Boss my Teacher".
If you like the Japanese show, you might take a look at the Korean original. It's pretty funny.

I'm always torn over whether or not to put up spoilers about Overtime. If not for that stupid ending I'd be going around telling everyone it's one of the greatest romantic comedies ever made.
But since the ending had me bellowing at my TV screen, I tend not to talk about it much. But 99% of it was great.

I probably wasn't expecting as much from "Farwell Mr. Premier" You're right, the plots were very thin... but the cast made it enjoyable for me. (Probably because, like you, I'm not enjoying the new crop of dramas as much. )
Man, you're getting hold of some interesting stuff!
I've just started watching Mada koi wa hajimaranai, from 1995. What a cast!!! Another silly little romatic comedy... but good is good.
It's ridiculous. I'm starting to think that the grainier the video, the more I'll like the series. (Must be an old guy thing.) _________________

I'm half way (episode 6) into "Koi ni Ochitara".
Finished this drama before going to bed last night. This is enjoyable enough for me to finish it in one go. Kusanagi Tsuyoshi's acting was surprisingly good (I haven't seem much of him previously), although his catwalk-like gait was a bit irritating. Wakui Emi is a favourite of mine and she was superb here. The rest of the cast was fine, although I really don't know why the producer picked tall girls for the cast.
The soundtrack wasn't bad either. I'll try to get my hands on the OST and post a link when I get it.
