Yes, the writers pointed that Shouta's true ability wasn't really engineering but telepathy & psychic powers.

No... he's more like Superman, he doesn't use his powers and lives like everyone, pretending he's nothing special.

I too felt nothing really happened. Its like she kept her feelings to herself or something and concentrated more on her work. Don't know if she decided to nothing too so that her friendship with Yayoi doesn't go a little bad
