Your critique of this series is very accurate. In my post re: this dorama, I think I characterized it as "bland." Wouldn't it be awesome if some TV producer would have the guts to buck the current trend of littering dorama with these flavors-of-the-month boytoys and overly saccharin cutiepies and get real actors--veteran, consummate performers--and find a script worthy of their talents.
Just finished Farewell, Mr Premier - another delightful masterpiece with the same touch as Ohsama no Resutoran. I truly savoured this dorama the whole way through. definitely a wonderful change from the current trends! _________________

I've been watching Mokuyoubi no shokutaku (Dinner on Thursday) ...
I thought Mokuyoubi was okay. The one thing that really prevented me from liking it a lot was that the young husband was such a dick. But I guess they needed that for the "drama". Other than that, I thought it was pretty good, and to me, it was quite different from Double Kitchen, as it wasn't really about the Mother/Daughter In-law dynamic. I thought it was more about "wandering hearts", which we see in the young wife, and the mother and father to varying degrees. Overall I found it enjoyable, but not special.

I feel compelled to give a dissenting opinion
I finished this drama (a/k/a "Souri to yobanaide") recently, and I thought it was almost complete crap.
It's a drama/comedy about an unpopular prime minister, his wife/daughter, and his staff. I generally dislike Tamura Masakazu, and he didn't fail to disappoint me in this drama. Once again, I found him using his familiar mannerisms I disliked in Oyaji and Otousan. One thing you can say for the guy, he knows how to frown.
What really turned me off on the show was that I really didn't like the character of the prime minister: he turns out to be a liar, a cheat (the golf game), he neglects his wife, and he's a bit of letch (the freedonian gymnast). I found no reason to be sympathetic to him. When a drama fails to generate sympathy for the main characters, it's usually a lost cause.
I thought Suzuki Honami wasn't well used. She's a charming actress, but here she plays a superficial wife character, who also commands little sympathy. I felt her talents weren't well used.
Sato Aiko is darn cute, but her attempts at physical comedy were embarrassing.
I did like some of the performances of the supporting cast. I liked Tsuruta Mayu. I thought Nishimura Masahiko was good, as well as Toda Keiko. They both can play it over the top at times, but in this drama, I thought they hit the mark.
But overall, I'd say it was crap, neither really funny, nor compelling as a drama.

I gleaned this from the Japan Times:
"'Dramanga' Dept: There are so many mangas being adapted to the drama format nowadays they deserve a generic classification all their own. I call them "Dramanga" and the latest addition is the popular Rumiko Takahashi manga and animated series Maison Ikkoku. Next spring, TV Asahi airs a special version starring Misaki Ito as heroine Kyoko Otonashi.
In a refreshing change of pace, amateur actors, aged 20-25, are being invited to audition for the male lead, Godai. No professional actors need apply. Applications accepted until Sept. 7.
With reference to that other thread, I think this is probably the reason why so many recent dramas suck. The majority of Manga just won't translate that well to real life. You just can't take the liberties like they do in manga without straining believeability.
But ... Maison Ikkoku, hell yeah! ... I've been waiting for this for years. I just hope they don't ass it up.

it's seems the plethora of manga-inspired dramas is akin to the epidemic of reality shows here in the States....about as dire and wanted as 30 fat people on the last rubber liferaft from a sinking ship.

not surprisingly those two j-dramas were doing the best early on, probably still doing well with J-tv ratings.

Just finish watching Somarie. Watching from 8.30 pm until 5.30 am...and didn't sleep all the night... uhhh....I feel like flying all over the world now. I feel boring, watching the new dramas only, so I take my time to watch old drama.
Miho is insanely beautiful in this drama. Now I wonder why Goro love him so much. ahahaha....

yes, i've noticed he reuses the same bag of tricks that he uses in his other doramas but it rather fits his character.
As for the prime minister, IMO, they deliberately made his character with many faults ie. to make him more human - despite the plot from left field (i don't think there's any way they could get such a premier). the main character need not generate sympathy for a series to be good; in this case, i'd say the premier's faults along with the incredulity of some of the other characters
Click on button to reveal/hide spoiler:
(such as promoting a graduate student to chief cabinet minister, albeit one who doesnt seem to have even the slightest knowledge of how politics works, or to have a vice-premier who holds 3 cabinet posts simultaneously)
makes this dorama fun. it's not meant to be taken seriously and i feel its been done to poke fun at some of the flaws, both of the characters and of the actual political system.

as for the supporting cast, i think they achieved what the producers were trying to achieve - a light comedy with a human touch (and also have the same feel as King's Restaurant) and in this series, i think they've succeeded in doing so _________________
