Shinshin: I am 23 as by now and I don't have any problems with learning languages. Of course I never stopped learning foreign languages since I was four ... on the other hand I never put much effort into it.
Are you fluent in any foreign language?

And how did you try to learn Japanese? Why is it so difficult for you? Maybe you just didn't yet find the right way to learn languages.

Suave_yamapi: Yes. There are special schools which might allow their students to take more than three foreign languages, but that's rare.

And, yes, the Rechtschreibreform is so utterly stupid. People begun to write just how they want to. Bang Head

I so want to emigrate.

Here when applying for high school (which btw. we call middle school, high education is university), you pick one or two language classes and go with it 'till the end. Choice is usually between english, deutsch, french and spanish, which are far more practical then latin and ancient greek Rolling eyes.

Do you think that's too old to learn to be fluent in a new language?

That's different for every individual, though there's certain truth that younger ppl assimilate foreign language better Sweat.

Well, I didn't learn to speak English in school anyway. Bonk I had, like, the worst teachers ever.

Hahaha, me neither. I remember one of my english teachers was sectarian, she talked nonsence all the time and me and my classmates just played cards during class...

Aside from English, I'm fluent in my native tongue Tagalog and Visaya. I studied French before in high school, and took the first two required courses for my major in college. I did pretty well and I think I could have gotten even better if I also took the intermediate classes. So yeah, I'm not so bad in learning languages Sweat Even now I'm absorbing Japanese pretty well on my own without taking any classes, but it's been hard discipline-wise. It doesn't help much either when I have a major that requires my full attention. I'm just wondering if I could still learn languages as well as I used to before when I get to that age. I probably still could. I just hope that my passion for Japanese would still be there at that time.

I suppose you won't have any problems with learning languages in some years or even later in your life, then. And if you're interested in languages in your youth I doubt that interest will cease in a couple of years.

My grandma started learning Italian in her late sixties Wink

Well, saying that I'm able to speak Latin is a bit exaggerated. I had it at school, for about 3 years, but we never talked in Latin during the courses. We just translated texts.

But you're right. It was very tough, because there are no situations, in which you could use that language to practise it. Although we had a girl in our class, who was able to read and translate Latin texts, as if they were written in her mother tongue - she was really creepy. *haha*

hehe

Well, it should make it easier to learn latin based languages like French, Spanish, Italian... If you want to. Sweat

Well, of course I speak German Smile and I speak my dialect *lol* Some people say, that this is like an own language. During my studies in an other part of Germany no one understood me when I was speaking dialect Smile

then english - I think I am fluent in it. I have had it about ten years in school and University.

I learned also French at school. But I didn't use it very often since then so I understand all, but speaking is a bit bad

In University I had Spanish and Dutch. Well I only have basic knowledge, but it's better than nothing.

As I have some relatives from the Philippines I am learnign Tagalog - very slowly, but I do!

And - of course - like everyone here, I am learning Japanese. I am still a beginner...

So not many languages, but I am proud of it.

Oh... ..

yes the word "Japanology" is used in Europe, here in North America we use the term "Japanese Studies" but it refers to the same thing.

don't worry. In school, my english was also not very good. Only by using it again and again I improved it.
A good practise is watching movies in their original. No problem with dvds these days Smile
