... could be her haunting eyes, or husky voice.
But there's just something about Japanese actress Maki Horikita, 18, that brings on the chills.
Final Call actress Maki Horikita.
It's no wonder she has starred in no less than four horror films since her debut three years ago.
Her latest is the last instalment of the death-by-handphone trilogy, Final Call, which is now showing in cinemas here.
Even in the hit drama Nobuta Wo Produce that catapulted her to fame last year, Maki plays a timid, ostracised girl who could pass off as Sadako with her messy hair and aura of mystery.
She was hardly a pretty sight, but her constantly-lowered face actually piqued the curiosity of many fans who found her character ugly but adorable.
Her acting ability also struck a chord with fans and earned her a spot in the hottest newbies list, alongside Aoi Miyazaki (Nana) and Masami Nagasawa (Crying Out Love In The Centre Of The World).
Advertisers fawned over Maki and she also won a leading role in the currently-showing Teppan Girl.
She plays the cheerful titular character Akane, who works in her family's okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) restaurant - a refreshing change from her previous dark roles.
In real life, Maki just celebrated her birthday last month with a takoyaki party and the launch of a collection of short stories that she had penned for CM Now magazine since 2004.
But, don't think that she is a fearless girl for having taken on so many horror films.
She actually cried fowl from a simple chicken-hugging scene in Final Call, reported Ming Pao newspaper.
'The most frightening scene for me was when I had to hug a real chicken!' she said.
'I didn't know how to hold it properly and it ran loose.'
In the film, Maki plays a high school girl who gets help from a malevolent spirit to get revenge on the classmates who have bullied her.
Co-star Meisa Kuroki plays her best friend, and they got along so well during filming that they've released a pictorial book together.
But there is no worry that they'll ever fall for the same guy, as they have different tastes in men.
Maki said she is attracted to guys who are humorous and sing well, while Meisa likes them masculine and muscular.
Interestingly, Maki's description fits her Nobuta co-star Kazuya Kamenashi. He is known to be goofy and is the main vocalist of boy band Kat-tun.
There were rumours of them dating off the set last year, and they were seen holding hands at a convenience store in Tokyo.
But it didn't last long, as Kazuya, 20, hooked up with 40-year-old actress Kyoko Koizumi in a controversial romance in the middle of this year.
Apparently, Maki has since focused her energy on her acting career.
Her next project is the novel-adapted film Argentine Hag. She plays the teenage daughter of a widowed tombstone-maker who falls in love with a gypsy-like woman with silver hair
kinda sux. maybe when she gets a little more popular they maybe easier to find.
taking on these crappy dramas might hurt her popularity tho
Wink Up 12
Which crappy dramas? I've only seen her in NWP, Densha Otoko, and Kurasagi, and the first two were AWESOME dramas. I'm indifferent to Kurasagi, but I don't think that makes her run crappy. Mind you, I haven't seen her latest drama she's in... _________________

when i say crappy i mean Kurosagi and Teppan Shoujo Akane. I liked her in Kurosagi but the drama was very repetitive and bored the hell out of me.
NWP and her episode of Tsubasa no Oreta Tenshitachi where great _________________
