Actor Watanabe Ken (43) headed off for Los Angeles yesterday (1/23) to attend Sunday's Golden Globe Awards, to be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. He is the first Japanese actor in 47 years to be nominated for an award. Watanabe co-starred alongside Tom Cruise and Sanada Hiroyuki in The Last Samurai, a fictional epic tale of honor lost and found in the early Meiji era. By coincidence, he shared first class with several of the cast of Lord of the Rings, in Japan on a PR trip.
Darn, lost out to tim robbins last night...

Yeah, I was rooting for Ken as well. Well at least it gets him more notoriety. Of course that doesn't mean squat in Hollywood, 'cause they'd stereotype him in other samurai flicks and the like...

i happened to have watched the movie when i was travelling in a ship to an island. It never struck me that the ship crew would air a new movie, so all the way i thought it was just an old movie. (i am a person who watches less western movies and i dun read newspapers, so i dun know much.)

I watched the starting of the movie, up until Ken went to meet the emperor and said the line: "I'm not the emperor, you are." or something like that, and i fell asleep because i am starting to have a headache.. and the next thing i knew, is that they were fighting and only Ken and Tom were the only ones left. From there, i watched until the ending, because the ship was docking. SHUX!! if i ever knew it was a new movie then, i would just keep my eyes open no matter what! What a waste...

but really, eventhough i've missed the middle-near-end part, i really liked the whole movie, it's really cool! Also, the japanese woman in the movie is pretty too! What movie has she acted in? cause she looks awfully familiar.. hmm... where oh where hv i seen her b4? My Husband original version? they look somewhat alike..

I just watched this movie. It actualy preimiered here in sweden last friday so.

Just got to say it was an amazing movie. Alot of beutiful fotography of incredible nice looking enviroments. Really good acting. Even from tom cruise who I usualy dont have that high hopes for.

And of course it's a work of fiction so I wont bother with historical things.

But I really enjoyed the view of a romantized late 1800 japan. And of course the tales of westerners learnign to appreciate other cultures always works if done well :)

Watched it 2 days ago and I must say that it lived up to my expectations.
It was an awesome movie and I loved the fighting scenes!
This is definitely one of my favorites.

I was very impressed by the scene where the Samurai were riding through the dusty forest, in their first battle. It looked so great, elegant and strong Naughty

I really liked that scene too! It was a great feeling!

***** SPOILER *****

I saw it a second time recently and the scene where Tom apologizes to Koyuki for killing her husband really choked me up... It was intense.

so true...

She was a relative unknown in Japan... now it seems the Western world that was taken by her asks Japan "who is this star?" of which many had no reply. lol

I don't think so... it's probably a screen name. Most Japanese artistes change their name to make it sound better.

It IS her real given name. Her full name is Koyuki Kato. She writes "Koyuki" in kanji.
