firewalls / antivirus are overrated. if you know what youre doing .. you don't need it.

i have yet to have an intrusion on my computer.since 99 all my computers are awesome. i setup a 2nd pc for anyone who comes and goes through my house and that thing is solid also.

though .. my friend seems to attract those types of things. i had to clean out a nasty virus on his computer that DISABLE his antivirus .. hahah .. now that he has broadband, gotta teach him how to use a firewall.

Gotta agree with Groink on this one.

Not everyone may be a "computer whiz/geek" (take your pick)

But if you don't need it, good for you! At least you save money on it!

But for people like me, the money is well worth it.

Internet isn't a safe playground anymore like it used to be. Antivirus and firewall are recommended nowadays, a standard to every computer which is connected to the internet. Well, a firewall does tend to show off, "The firewall has blocked subseven attack!"-messages appear pretty often, I'm sure not all of the attacks are real attacks. The firewall does exaggerate at figures and protection, why? It makes us feel safe as it has protected us from the "all threats". My point is, not all the threats are real attacks. Only very small amount of em are.

*The firewall has blocked 452 attemps*

Even still, if you're using a crappy comp, wouldn't you want it to last as long as it will? Unless if you're waiting for an excuse to buy a new one...

My computer costed me about $1,750.00 before rebates. No way am I going to let it get all f*cked up.

And if I didn't have antivirus and firewall, then I couldn't visit those porn/AV sites........ Sweat hehe Beaten

Guys,

There seems to be a huge flood of e-mails floating around that contain the subject "E-mail account disabling warning". It's definitely not legit, and you should delete the e-mail without opening it.

Here are the symptoms... A virus scrapes a user's PC of domain names. It'll then plug the domain name into several places on a form letter, then sends the e-mail to an e-mail address containing the same domain name. For example, using JDorama.com as an example, you may see something like this:

Dear user of "JDorama.com" mailing system,

We warn you about some attacks on your e-mail account. Your computer may contain viruses, in order to keep your computer and e-mail account safe, please, follow the instructions.

Further details can be obtained from attached file.

The Management,
The JDorama.com team http://www.JDorama.com

So far, none of the antivirus companies have put out updates to their software to address this.

Symantec just now put out their 03/03/2004 v9 update. Not sure if this update address the e-mail flood.
