It's interesting how things get lost over time.

Quote:
Japan is wrestling with the idea of revising its American-drafted constitution

While the U.S. did have a heavy hand in drafting Japan's constitution, the provisions about becoming a "pacifist" nation and renouncing warfare of any kind was a Japanese idea.

General MacArthur wasn't happy about that one, and he played a big part in creating and setting up the training for the National Self Defense Force.

The U.S. (MacArthur) wanted Japan to have an army. Much the same way the Generals wanted Iraq to maintain their army, and ended up pulling out their hair when Rumsfeld ordered it disbanded.

No army (Japanese or Iraqi) meant more American Troops on site, doing more of the dirty work, for a longer period of time.

Ah, because this is the movie thread...

I just saw a Chinese movie titled "The Promise".

I got it moslty because it stars Sanada Hiroyuki.

It's an epic story of battles, love, the relationships between men and the gods, yada yada.

Like so many of the Chinese films these days, it is absolutely beautiful, completely empty, and in the end, totally unsatisfying.[/b]

Saw The Children of Men the other night....with Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, and Michael Caine. Entertaining. Set in a bleak future with an engaging story line great set design, location footage and some really intense urban combat.

part of the movie reminded me of historical footage from the Battle of Stalingrad in WWII - The War of the Rats.

Speaking of WW2, Ken Burns' is set to release a new series in the Fall of 2007 called The War...

If it's anywhere near as good as The Civil War, Baseball, and Jazz, he's got another winner. Victory! Peace!

Mrs A.D. and I saw The Holiday the other day..... not a bad way to spend a few hours. It's Mrs A.D.'s favorite movie genre - the romantic comedy. She liked it so much that she went and watched it again yesterday with her friend.

Two things that occurred to me:

1) Cameron Diaz seemed to be shot in soft focus a lot. I don't think she will age well Bleah

2) I hate Jude Law. Nobody should be allowed to be so good-looking. Bleah

Lol. That's what my brother says. I made him watch it with me and now he hates Jude Law. As for myself, never really cared for him. Heard he's a sleezeball in real life, especially with that nanny scandal.

yea me three. Mr Green Jude Law may be purdy but he doesn't do anything for me either. Now you can give me Johnny Depp's beauty, his sexy voice, soulful eyes and sly smile any day of the week! w00t!
