I've started watching Yasashii Jikan ("Affectionate Time") and so far... it's really outstanding.
Okay, there's no happy happy joy joy here. No comedy. A bit of young love, but it's not a romance. And if you're looking for action... look elsewhere.
This is a quiet, thoughtful, sad and at times somber drama.
I've said before, I don't like weepy melodramas. But I'm a sentimental old fup, and this one is getting to me big time.
It's the story of a family that's been hit by tragedy before the series even starts. And we pick up the tale of this broken family, this estranged father and son, in the aftermath.
The acting is quite remarkable, the scripts are top notch, and I'm not exadurating when I say that I'm stunned when the credits roll at the end of each episode. Heck, I'm so sure that I've only been watching for a few minutes that I've gone back and checked the time to see if these are really 45 minute episodes.
I've watched 4 so far, each has gone by too fast, and each has left me itching to watch another before turning off and going to bed.
I watched this about a year ago and liked it a lot. A deliberately paced, contemplative adult drama with stunning Hokkaido scenery and a wonderful haunting theme song. The cast is replete with veteran actors/actresses which certainly elevates the quality of the show. This series is so out of place from the pop star, idol-driven, banal crap which has come to dominate dorama in recent years.

Glad you like it. I've got in on my harddisk and is just waiting for an appropriate time to start watching. BTW if you like the story and the pace, I suggest you try Home Drama too.

Thankfully it looks like they they cast the young male lead with someone who's less(?) widely known and popular (though he is a member of Arashi), so as to not draw attention away from the story...
Under the heading; it had to happen sometime... one of the selling points for me in deciding to watch this series was Ninomiya, the kid who plays the son.
True, the fact that Misa Shimizu is in it was the reason I traded for it in the first place. But I never worried for a moment about Ninomiya.
I'd seen him in a couple of other series (Akimahende and Stand Up) and had come to think of him as quite a darned good little actor... long before I realized that he'd come to TV via the J-Pop route.
For me, this kid helps rather than hurts the story.

I would have bet money that you would have enjoyed this show. I'm glad you chimed in.
Eve,
Settle in on a cold evening, pour yourself a glass of wine, grab any spare Norwegian that happens to be passing by and press play. A nickle says you'll be hooked before the end of the first episode.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll look for Home Drama. But I'm really gonna need some comedy and some giggling cuties once I finish with this one. _________________
Still watching Bow 30 Degrees. Man, this is one of the best dramas of all time. It has all the elements that make for a good drama: short episodes and extremely beautiful girls.
Just curious, does Hideaki Ito qualify as eye candy?
Good gawd yesh! Tho I'm not drooling over him. Something about him turns me off, but he's brilliant when he smiles. I find Sakaguchi Kenji far more attractive. He's also playing such a lovable character! _________________

ok, so i checked out Hitmitsu no Hanazono ep 1 and Kirakira Kenshui.
Shaku Yumiko in Himitsu no Hanazono was great. Great to see her in a drama again, since Stand Up was on hold by Nya. And yes i saw they did release ep 6
Also those who saw the Prince of Tennis Live Action movie, the guy who played Echizen Ryoma is also in this drama.
Kirakira Kenshui ep 1 was hilarious
Konishi Manami san looked so cute and was so funny.
The girl who played that one girl in Dandori is in this. Good thing i'm recognizing faces
Alls left is to watch KimuTaku's new drama. If all goes well, i'm following 3 dramas this season _________________
