There are a lot more oem, or generic drives out there now a days...
theres some OEM/generic drives that are actually repackaged brand name ones..
for example. the brand i bought was a generic brand named Cendyne. in actuality it was a Pioneer A105 model.
It was a little bit cheaper than the packaged Pioneer A105.
good luck searching! _________________
I tried to burn dvd games, all failed. The games were in ISO format. First attempt, burned Max Payne 2 on Nero, no go. I used DataWrite Classic dvd-r 1x. Second attempt, on Alcohol 120%, no go. The third and last attempt, on the very known DVD decrypter, no go! Aargh! 3 dvd-r flushed down the toilet
I thought the problem was lying around the burning softwares, but it didn't looked like it. I burned the ISO on the renowned burnin softwares. I've come to a conclusion that my PS2 didn't accept the media although I've read in the forums ppl have had successful burns on DataWrite Classic 1x. I know PS2 is picky on the media.
Oh well, I'll try a Verbatim datalifeplus next. A person is sellin a 25 package Verbatim for $75, trying to haggle over the price down to $62, hehe.

I'm still waiting to buy myself a DVD-burner but it seems like Pioneer is the leading company in that department ne? Personally I'm a big Sony fan (currerntly using their CD-RW DVD-R combo drive) so I'll probably end up getting a Sony DVD-burner. ANy recommended models for me to look at and how stable is DVD burning so far. Like do you guys ever run into bad burns and are generic CDs safe. I'm not sure what's the shelf life for a dvd.
Hehe! Bought a Verbatim disc, it was a go! The ps2 booted the disc burned on Verbatim! Looks like ps2 fancies luxurious stuff...it doesn't like cheap media, very picky! Verbatim datalifeplus dvd-r 4x at $6,5 with a jewel case each at a local domestic appliance shop! Contaced the person who was sellin the 25 Verbatim dvd-r package, We'll see if a further negotiation is needed, hehe. Macross

I think the shelf life for DVDs is as long as CDs, neh? The only thing one might worry about is rot, but those instances seem few and far between...

I'm thinking of purchasing a DVD burner.
Please recommend me the BEST DVD burner out there for
burning Dramas, PS2 games and others.
I am willing to spend up to 200 dollars.
Please let me know. I'd like to have little faster speed as well.

I think iot was mentioned earlier that the faster burners aren't necessarily the best, because there's more chance of writing ewrrors occuring... For $200, I would think any name brand model (Sony, Pioneer, Plextor, etc.) would work just fine...
If you're gonna get a dvd burner for the sheer purchase of burning dvds, and not ripping games, then I would get the NEC-2500a. I have one and it's absolutely one of the best drive out there.

what do you mean picky about media? Does it only want the expensive kind of DVDs?
Hey what do you guys think about External DVD burner?
Is the quality less than the internal ones??

despite the fact that they're more conveneint, is the quality less than the internal ones?
I don't think there's any quality variation, but the external drive would be more expensive, and maybe slower, unless it's a Firewire drive...

One suggestion... I wouldn't talk about duping PS2 games. You're just asking for trouble because SONY and other game manufacturers are vigorously searching these messageboards for possible copyright violators.
Otherwise, I think the Pioneer model is more likely the sure thing to get.
IMHO, if your PC can handle two 5.25-inch drives, I'd highly recommend you get BOTH a DVD+/-R drive, as well as a regular CDRW drive. The reason is that the CDR/CDRW write speeds on DVD writable drives are generally much slower than a regular CDRW drive. At home, I run a 48X CDRW drive along with a SONY 2X DVDR on the same PC. So when I crank out VCDs and SVCDs, I can make them on the CDRW drive over twice as fast as if I used the DVDR drive. Just something to think about if you have an additional $50 or so to spend.

Picky as in only liking high quality media. But liek I said before, I'm not too sure about it.
Well, neither making "backups" nor conversations are illegal in the forums.
I've used Pioneer DVR-106D for sometime. You must have read my comments regardin the burner. I highly recommend the burner. If you want clear reviews and info, check out http://www.cdrinfo.com/. After browsing the reviews, take your time and make your decision. I chose Pioneer after readin numerous positive feedbacks the burner received.
