I don't recall the first episode but I just read a synopsis on it and it said that Yagyu Jubei fought Hattori Hanzo.
Sonny Chiba also played Hattori Hanzo in Shadow Warriors but I believe.
I'm a bit confused. Wasn't Hattori Hanzo an Iga Ninja?
Weren't Jubei's helpers in the Yagyu conspiracy also Iga Ninjas?
I know they had enemies called the Koga ninjas. Getting kind of mixed up
Any clarification...much appreciated.

I remember the Yagyu Conspiracy when I was younger. I enjoyed it very much.
I used to have a crush on Etsuko Shiomi. She must be quite old by now though. |
I think Etsuko-san is in her 40's... I'm guessing she was the same age as Sanada Hiroyuki, who like me, is 43.

Yes he did, for Shadow Warriors (Kage no Gundan) 1-4... Great series...

Yes.

Sort of. They were called Ura Yagyu (Yagyu spies)...

In Shaodow Warriors, they constantly battled the Koga, but not in The Yagyu Conspiracy, if I recall...
Note that this is pretty much from memory, so there might be a mistake or two...
Did you see the link on the previous page regarding The Yagyu Conspiracy series?

Absolutely. Also anything with Mifune Toshiro and Sanada Hiroyuki is worth a look. |
Sanada Hiroyuki rocks too. The first time I saw him in Samurai film was "Sudden Death". But I was way too small to understand what's going on in that film (same applies when I watch the original zatoichi film) . I should re-watch all of them I guess.

Oh, you'd love Hiroyuki-san in Twlight Samurai then... He's great. The movie won a buncha Japanese Academy Awards...

Jeez, I've got 18 of them. |
Yow, that's pretty near all of 'em, neh?

Depends on the sites you read. Some say there were 22 movies. Others say 24. But at 18 I think I"ve got a pretty good start.
Then again, there are about 100 TV series episodes out there somewhere. So I expect I'll always have some bit of Zatoich to be hunting down. |
Hmm, I've got a ways to go: I only have Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo so far...
Quote: | By the way, have you ever seen Shintaro's other Samuri character?
Hanzo The Razor.
He made three of those, and they are a trip. Very different character. I was half way through the first one "Whose got the Gold" before I realized that Katsushin was "The Razor"! |
Yow, I've never even heard of that character... I've gotta look up that one.
Quote: | And while I'm here, I have to mention Shintaro's brother, Wakayama Tomisaburo (usually credited as Kenzaburo Jo) He did the "Baby Cart" Samuri series. Another very memorable series. |
Yep, I know of this one. The famous Lone Wolf and Cub series.

You mentioned that you saw, and liked the "One Armed Swordsman" movies, earlier in this thread.
Well, in the tradition of "Zatoichi meets Yojimbo", they also did a "Zatoichi meets the one armed swordsman". (One of the ones I do not have.)
I guess it pays to be the all time favorite samuri series in Japan. Everyone else wants to come and play with you. |
I saw the entire One-armed Swordsman series when I was a kid (only two movies, actually) and they were great. The carnage was incredible, as was the bloodletting... If memory serves, the Zatoichi vs. One-Armed Swordsman film had two endings: one with each being the victor, depending upon the theater (Chinese or Japanese) it was shown in...

I think it might be a longshot, but sometimes dark horses win.

Thanks for the info on Hanzo and the Yagyu conspiracy.
I think if Yagyu Jubei and Miyamoto Musashi just met and had a duel...I'll go with Jubei.
If it was a scheduled duel where Musashi had a chance to study Jubei's style...I'll go with Musashi.
Anybody have their thoughts? |
Glad to help... Funny that you should mention Jubei vs. Musashi: In the series Sorekara no Musashi (http://blofeld.qbranch.se/~maal01/Sorekara/sorekara_series.htm), the two do go at it, and Musashi wins... Check it out!

actually... who is Musashi ? his name sounds familiar.. i think coz that was the name of some fishing manga... but as a samurai i have not heard much of him... |
Eh?? Never heard of Musashi?? Miyamoto Musashi is the most famous swordsman/fencer in all of Japan... There's been a number of books, movies TV series, etc. written about his life and training in The Way of the Sword... Currently there's a multi-part manga about Musashi titled Vagabond... Among the many books he's written, the most famous is Go Rin No Sho...

Just about everything that I've seen focuses on his early years and his training of The Way of the Sword... Legend says that he never lost in 60+ duels over his lifetime... And most of those were before age 30, I believe...
