It's a typical case of someone making up their minds about an issue and proceed to find proof that support their view. There is no arguing with a person who only sees the sky from his private patch in the well.

He wouldn't be the first person here to say "well, I don't see a problem with it, so it's okay..."

Isn't that the same kinda ignorance that non-white people in America have been fighting for the past 50+ years?? Sweat

No, but my understanding is that it is a corruption of the word "negro" - correct me if i'm wrong.

Anyway, it doesn't matter why the word is offensive to the Japanese people: The fact is that it is. There's a whole thread about the subject in this section of the forum.

@setfree: The word Jap may appear to be short for Japanese but it is now and has always been a derogatory word. Did you take the time to read this thread entitled "Use of the word 'Jap' - Is it Offensive?"

Here is the link again: http://jdorama.com/viewtopic.22.420.htm

BTW the N word was derived from the word Negro. Spanish people aren't Spiks, Irish people aren't Micks, Italians aren't WOPs (standiing for Without Papers), Chinese people aren't Chinks and Japanese people aren't Japs. It is all about respect, not about abbreviations.

Instead of being stubborn on your view of this subject please take the time to become informed by reading what many of us here have already discussed. Then you won't have to keep asking the same question over and over again.

Let's simplify your initial post.

Example 1 - Bus.
f%$#face gets denied.

Example 2 - Campus.
f%$#face gets denied.

Example 3 - Self.
Not a f%$#face, has girlfriend.

Hey guys, sorry it's taken me so long to move this thread.
I just got a new iMac, and it's taken me a while to get used to it and get my stuff moved over from my old notebook.

As for this topic, the fact of the matter is that Japanese girls ARE shy and are intimidated easily (by all different types of people). In North America, its not unusual to smile, say "hi," or start a random conversation with people, but in Japan, it's VERY unusual. If you don't get or at least accept that fact, then I don't recommend that you pursue your Japanese studies or attempts at getting a language partner any further.
Of course not all Japanese are like that, and there may be in fact some that will call you for a language exchange.
But the fact remains that most of them probably won't not because they're racist, but because of their culture.

Anywho, moving thread, people.
Move along, move along... nothing to see here. Beaten

Setfree. A girl in Japan (I was in Japan) told me "I really want to go to America." I asked her where she would like to live and she said Washington DC. That's a bit odd I thought to myself, so I asked her why there? "Because there are many Black men."

If all you want is sex (and I know you do) American Black guys get all the action they can handle in nipponville, double points for urban blacks. Africans get no love at all, except when they dress hip hop style and stand in front of bars.. So buck up, go over there and teach. The word Jap is gaining ground and doesn't have the stigma it once had (in the written word) but there is no reason to speak it- if you said Jap during a conversation you are clearly making a racial statement.

I'm an officer in my school's Japanese club right now and sometimes my friends ask me if we have any "Jap" club meetings and if we do when is it. Whenever they do that I tend to correct them and tell them about how the term is offensive to the Japanese people and how they shouldn't use it next time. When I tell them that they always ask me "Why is it offensive? It's just a shorter term." I try to explain it to them sometimes but it can't get through their thick heads. They still have the habit of saying the word. You wouldn't really understand why something is offensive unless it was your own race.

I usually find that telling people that the term was used by soldiers who slaughtered their people usually gets a pretty decent reaction of "well okay then, I won't do that anymore".

Regardless of whether slaughtered would be the word you would use, soldiers of foreign armies faught the Japanese throughout history and English speaking cultures always tended to shorten the Japanese name to "Jap" for quick refference. This is done in the same way that U.S. soldiers refferred to the Vietnamese as "Charlie". We had a similar name for pretty much every ethnic group we ever faught.

I am really surprised and sad at how a lot of people still do not know that the word "Jap" is derogatory. Shake Head

This is the reason why the international 3-letter abbreviation for Japan is JPN and not JAP.

A friend of mine, who majored in Japanese studies in the university, usually refers to our class as 'Jap class'. I'm really surprised at her; I kept stressing that if she can't say 'Japanese', better to use 'Nihongo' instead of 'Jap'.

I do hope that discussions like this one will help educate the majority.

You need to correct her on that and if she continues, you should continue to correct her... It's the only way to stop it, else the usage of the term will continue to propagate.... Sweat
