Right after you installed the OS or after you started installing other software?
I can't imagine it happening right after a fresh OS install... Especially if the problem was just a recent occurrence.
Well, I had my computer built you see. So I had the OS installed, and other software installed. There were some problems, including the icons, so we reformatted the computer. For a while, things were fine, and the problem reappeared with the icons.
So you see, even after a "fresh OS install" the problem still occurred. Everything is fine, except those stupid icons.

If things were fine for a while, you can't attribute it to the initial OS install: something got changed/updated/installed between the time it was fine and not.
BTW, who reformatted your HD? The shop?
I think you have to methodically install the OS and monitor any and all changes to track down the problem.

Try this:
Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices
See if the checkbox is set for "Place volume icon in the taskbar".

I know it must have been something in the meantime. My cousin formatted the HD.
I found some stuff on the net, so I'm gonna try that. Hopefully I should find a solution. I dunno if I want to reinstall the OS. Everything is great, except the icons in the taskbar.

I checked, and it's checked to appear in the taskbar.

jaegal_maut: you better make sure you backup your precious movies and data immediately. (you never know when a HD dies, but when it does it just dies - no return)
after that, try removing IDE cable, inserting cable, try HD in another comp.
but then again it could be anything, is it getting too hot? Every year when summer kicks in lots of people start getting HD problems due to overheating.
uhno: according to this article it's a bug, solutions aren't definite either but it can't hurt to try.

I think that overheat is not the problem, I got an extra fan fro HD and my room is always air condiotned about 18 C,
And yes I am backing up my prescious data now, I just bought another HD today to back it up.. It really sucks in a situation like this.. _________________
my computer has a virus, i am currently using another computer to access jdorama..
basically somehow i acquired a virus, and cannot access my desktop, it seems to go thru some loop while accessing my desktop and re-boots, i see my desktop with icons for about 10 seconds, and then reboots every single time, it is so frustrating.
any suggestions as what i should do? my friend said that i can salvage my harddive without sacrificing anything on my harddrive, but i will need to reinstall windows.
is there a safemode? my friend said this probably won't work, as it happen to him before, he just had to reinstall windows, saving his HD so he didn't lose anything.

That just sux! So you can't access the computer through safe mode either? The best solution I can think of is to reformat your comp. It's the safest way to ensure everything is clean. Maybe someone with more experience can aid you in this situation.

but if i refomat, all my data will be lost on my hd?
my friend suggested just reinstalling windows...he had this loop thing happen before, exactly what i had...
is safe mode in the boot screen?
ESC- while computer is rebooting?
not sure if that will work, i haven't tried it yet. i have my doubts.
yeah, i am going to try to get someone to help me out...

Thanx, Terryb. I unchecked the UPnP User Interface through the Control Panel. Then I restarted my comp. Nothing changed. The icons don't appear.
What are the implications of disabling the UPnP altogether? or disabling the SSDP Discovery Service?
Thanx, Terryb, and bmwracer
UPnP is for network related applications. It automatically open ports in your router, for an application. (like Azureus). You can always manually add them or activate / disactivate the service when you don't need it. (Control Panel / Admin Tools / Services).
You can make sure everything is ok, by checking in Control Panel / system / hardware / device manager. If any components have a yellow icon next to it, that's probably the source of your problem. _________________
for now, i am able to access my desktop via Safe Mode, but i am not sure if i can go online still, and access some of my other videos, with Sound, since it is safe mode only.
right now i just want to see if i can back up some of my data while i have access again, to a desktop with limited safe mode.

Format is only helpful if your data that you want to keep, isn't on the same partition. Else you will end up losing everything. of course if you don't have seperate partitions than this conversation ends.
my safeproof method is hooking up the drive to another computer as 2nd drive, that way you can pull out the data you want, don't forget personal items like pics, emails, bookmarks on C:\ (those are oftenly forgotten)
OR
use a bootable disk to enter DOS and copy files from there to another drive.
but then you need to know some basic MS-DOS commands.

in the meantime, i am able to access my desktop, mostly via Safe Mode. I am currently backing up some of my flies, onto DVD/CD.
i realize that this won't fix the cause of the prb, but i just want to back up while i can. I will be taking into consideration some of the options you have mentioned. I just want to access my desktop again in regular mode, and maintain my HD if i can. Safe Mode for now, allows me to view some files, but i have no "sound" while playing video, and no access to the internet, but again i am in Safe Mode.....
i am using another computer if some of you are wondering how i have access to the internet. ok, thanks again.

well since you said the system would get into constantly rebooting loop, my advice is don't bother. because you risk corrupting your files, also when struck by a virus like this it's not wise to go online at all. I don't see why you would want to with an infected system anyway.
You're lucky that you can burn things in safemode so get your data safe first, then just format the drive.

... but you might copy the virus in the recent stuff you downloaded. I know 2 well known viruses that causes the reboot problem. Sasser worm and Blaster Worm. There are free anti virus you can boot from a CD or USB key. I think Ultimate Boot CD has one.

The trojans/viruses usually come with the installers (ie executables, as in cracks for programs etc) and when they do infect your system they place themselves in the c:\windows\system or \system32 folder.
i doubt people will back up that kinda data
movies files, mp3, pictures, personal data that one normally would backup are safe.
