Hmm, Amazon's got a Philips DVP5140 for $50USD... And I'm pretty sure there's a region-free hack for it.

*Cough* Excellent source

I've been lucky with my Philips 642 and LG upconverting player for playing back Divx/Xvid and be region free.

I have a modified box with a region free player, but it's not as silent as my dvd player. It's like a PC.

I'm not paying $30 for a remote. Blame Panasonic.

Already got that bookmarked... If I buy the Philips.

Yah, I remember you had an LG as well... Is it better than the Philips?

How are the remotes? The one for my LiteOn bites the proverbial big one. Shake Head

Crap. Mine needs a chipped remote. Shameful Cry

Easy solution,

1. open the battery compartment.
2. Take out the batteries, and unscrew the screw that's underneath.
3. Gently pry the top and bottom halves of the remote so that you dont break the tabs.
4. Take a can of Pringles and step on it.
5. Sprinkle contents into the open remote.
6. Reverse steps 3 thru 1.

I tried it and it didn't worked. I tried original flavor. Should I try a different flavor or do I need a Japanese flavor to make it region 2?

You have to use arare/senbei (sp?), er, rice crackers. Beaten

Thank you. Thumbsup

If that doesn't work, I'll try stuffing an onigiri in the disc tray. Bleah

Okay, now that I've gotten over my LAN problems, it's back to the region-free player hunt... Victory! Peace!

Which LG model do you have, doch?

I think it's the LG LDA-511. I bought it from BestBuy last year. When I got it, I wasn't even looking for a Divx-capable or region-free player since I had the Philips. I stumbled on the Divx part after reading the manual and used my good ole friend Google to find out that there was a region-free hack for the player.

Triple sweetness. I got an upconverting player that handles Divx (and subtitles) and is now region-free.

How's the remote?

The one on my LiteOn stinks.

Since you bought that LG last year, it's most likely that it's obsolete... Sweat

Would it be a fair assumption that all LG DVD players are hackable? I think the Philips players fall into that category...

I can't say, but it's far better than the Philips one (though it wouldn't take much to be better)

I would think so. Unofficially companies do not promote that their players are region-free hackable, but inside they know that for some people, it drives them to buying their players. It's way too easy to hack them sometimes.

Yeah, the one on the Panasonic recorder isn't so great, either.

My old Sony had the best one and the best search function.

Yup. The risk is buying one and finding out you can't hack it... Sweat

Depending on where you buy it....you could always return it. Thumbsup If you could find the model number, you could always Google it.

For some models, can't be sure about the hack.

There were a number of posts in Videohelp.com for a region hack for my Sony, but none of them panned out. Sweat

I want to say that the Philips 642 player is still being sold, but the fact that the remote sticks to high heaven and that it cannot playback Xvid files with QPEL, I'd look for another one.

Yeah, the 642 seems to be long in the tooth...

I'm looking at the 5140, 3960, and 3040... All are around $40-$50.

The 3960 has a 1080i upconvert, but it means nothing without a HDTV.

The upconvert feature is nice once you get a HDTV.

True.

And I'll need it in 2009 since that's the year we all go HD. Sweat
