thanks people. i think the monitor died so I bought a new one today. It's a ViewSonic 19" LCD widescreen. I don't know, but it seems like the image on my desktop is stretched out, kinda look weird. I have my desktop setting as 1024x768, but my monitor is 1044x990. Do I need to change something? Or is my desktop suppose to look stretched?

You need to switch to the 1440x900 display mode... Does your video card support that resolution?

If not, you might need to buy a new video card. Sweat

BTW, congrats on the new monitor. Smile

The mystery deepens: I brought the router into work and I attached to it a PC and our LAN and it works just fine with absolutely no tweaks or anything.

Gyabo...! bleh

I am highly suspecting that your PC is "dialing into" the DSL network. That's why it works when the PC is directly attached to the modem, and does not when the router is sitting in between. The router does not know how to "dial in" so there is no live connection.

When I had PacBell, aka SBC Global, aka "the new ATT", that was the case.

Thing is, it everything worked just fine until my DSL connection got flaky and I tried to investigate the problem... Bang Head Bang Head

On my cable internet, Comcast remembers the MAC address of the network adapter that first connected to the network. So I had to clone the MAC address onto the router for the connection to work. I don't recall if it's the same on DSL. Head Scratch

Added: That still doesn't explain what's different from when they "fixed" the problem.

The Netgear site suggested trying MAC "Spoofing," but it didn't make any difference....

When you attach the PC to the router, can you still access the setup page? You don't need to have an active internet connection.

If you can, there is usually a status page that shows you the IP address of the WAN port. If everything is working (i.e. your DSL is working) you should see an IP address that "looks good". 0.0.0.0 or 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x is not good.

Yup, I can access the setup page of the Netgear router.

There's the problem: I run the "Smart Wizard" and it detects that a dynamic DHCP is setup on the PC, yet when it's done with its gyrations, it can't connect to the internet: the IP address and everything else associated is 0.0.0.0.

"Smart Wizard" indeed. Shake Head Grumble

So nothing changed on your PC after they "fixed" your problem? And before they fixed it everything worked....afterwards nothing?

Well the problem was a bad/flaky switch in one of their neighborhood boxes...

I lost patience after it took them four days to fix it, so I thought I'd check my own connections.... Big mistake. Bang Head

So what did you do to try to fix the problem? It could help diagnose the problem.

Well, I bypassed the router and connected the DSL modem directly to my PC and that didn't work, since I had set up a static IP for port forwarding, so I enabled the DHCP in WinXP.

Now I was able to connect to the 'net, but the flakiness was still there, so I realized that it wasn't the router's fault... The next day, the DSL flakiness was finally fixed by Verizon, so I decided to reconnect my router to the DSL modem... And that's where I'm at right now. Sweat

Do you remember doing some settings on the router when you first used it? I recall you resetted it to the factory default settings.

Yatta...!

Problem fixed.... Sweat bleh

Had to change the router's IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.10.1... Sweat

I've now set my PC to a static IP address and all my port forwarding info is set up and working.... I can download dramas again... Victory! Peace! Sweat

And I've saved my router config to disk along with writing down all of the modified parameters. Thumbsup

Whew... *passes out*

Just right-click on the desktop / properties / settings. If the slider doesn't have the resolution you may need to update the monitor dirvers if it shows as default monitor or some other brand than the one you bought or, like bmwracer said, check if your video card support the resolution. If its 3 or 4 years old, it should be ok.

Congrats beem!

Computers can be SO aggravating: They refuse to do things the way they are supposed to sometimes, for no reason you can uncover.

Like I have to tell YOU that Smile

Just add file and printer sharing in the control panel / network settings. Then right-click on a folder and select share or.sharing and security on XP.

They also have to be part of the same domain or workgroup, ne?

My main computer (bmwracer) and secondary computer (aprildancer) are part of the same Workgroup, Home....
