Please don't debate with me over what I'm about to say... I'm just letting everyone know where I stand on this issue, so here goes...
I for one prefer to watch dramas on the TV set, period. My PC is for e-mail, programming, word processing, home finance, web surfing, and video editing and archiving. My PC is not part of my entertainment system.
When I first started capturing video content about 8 months ago, I was trying to get a feel for what Jdorama fans wanted. Nowadays, I don't care what people prefer. I capture exclusively on MPEG-2 and MPEG-2 for myself and myself only. I trade with others via snail-mail if they want my captures. My listings explain in great detail what formats my captures are in. I also retain the original captures. In many of my snail-mail trades, my clients have the same preferences as I. Some of them prefer that I convert the AVI containers to MPEG-x so they can view it on their TV. And I cringe and keep my mouth shut when they ask me of this. They also like permanent subtitles burned into the video. They don't like the subtitles on a separate file because, as you probably see in d-addicts, it involves the PC's operating system too much, and most major-brand DVD players can't play subtitle files.
In return, I HATE receiving re-rips. When I snail-mail traded with someone awhile back, the GTO series I received was a VCD re-rip of jem's DivX release. The quality was simply HORRIBLE!!!!
As far as p2p on-line trading, I upload MPEG-2 and MPEG-2 exclusively. Simply put, if people don't like working with those formats, then they shouldn't download my captures. I do, however, have stuff like UTSR that are quite unique, so if people decide to pass up on my A- graded version of UTSR simply because of the 750MB file size, then they'll have to settle on the D+ graded 150MB file size version of UTSR in DivX format. Hey, that's their loss! Ironically, these complainers still download my captures, so I'm not going to change. If they re-rip it to XviD or DivX, that's fine with me because they downloaded all 750MB of it, and therefore I'm already out of the loop.
OOps. I forgot to add that I work strictly from TV to freestanding Panasonic DMR-E20 and DMR-E50 recorders. I agree wtih Groink that my computer is for computer stuff like leaving messages here.

I play my files on my notebook computer but is outputed to my TV
No need to convert files and I don't have sit in front of my computer, best of both worlds
Mpeg-4 compression has gotten a lot better, JTV stuff is probably the best example of this, their Xvid encodes from DVD source looks awesome and you can still fit 2 eps per CD.
I kind of figured I might be in the minority, preferring to watch on my computer. I've never been much of a TV watcher anyway.
As for re-re-reencodes, I definately agree with groink that they look crappy. I kind of wonder if some files have been encoded from mpeg->divx and back again too many times. heh.
I haven't ever uploaded one of my recodes, but if I did, I'd definately label it as such.
I was kind of hoping to find some other recoders to share tips. For instance, I recently reencoded the Heaven's Coins 3 Ep3 from realvideo to divx, but there were a couple problems. The source was pretty bad and I ended up with a small but annoying audio delay for the 2nd half. I was wondering if someone else might have tackled that already. (This was from the version posted on d-addicts recently with only c-subs).

Hello People...
What's the fastest way to convert and avi with srt (subtitle) to VCD format? I know some techniques but it requires a number of software to do it and it takes very long time. Any software recommendation? Thanks.

i tried using tmpgenc plus and the subtitle is encoded together as long as the avi and srt are in the same folder. i do not know whether the free tmpgenc version can do this but try it first. the conversion guide can be found at http://www.vcdhelp.com

maxstlg, Can you provide me the exact URL of the page in www.dvdrhelp.com?
Thanks.
there are many guides to choose from. go to http://www.dvdrhelp.com/guides.php and in the format conversion drop-box just select AVI to VCD and click "Search or List Guides".
