just saw The Wow Choten Hotel

to me, it was definitely a 'WOW'

i love it! absolutely entertaining! Plus, i just love the casts, eventhough the ones i like don't really have big roles. Katori Shingo, Odagiri Joe with an extremely horrible wig, and Shinohara Ryoko as some sort of byotch (my gawd she's daymn hot) and so many more familiar faces.

this movie is hillarious!!! and guess who's wearing a blonde rug? no, not katori shingo, but shinohara ryoko rofl

two thumbs up for the Wow Choten Hotel! wonderful casts and an entertaining simple story (thank lord it doesn't need any thinking)

does anyone know the woman who sings at the ending??? know where i can get the song?

-------------------

is Tokyo Gomi Onna or PIKANCHI worth watching?

A.D.

The Uchoten Hoteru (aka The Wow Choten Hotel ) is wonderful.

It's from Writer / Director Koki Mitani. The same guy who did, "Welcome Back Mr. McDonald" & "University of Laughs". And "Uchoten Hotel" lives up to it's pedirgee.

It's a farce, paying homage to W.C. Fields 1933 "International House" and "The Grand Hotel" if you know those two movies.

Just about everybody you've seen in Dramas is in here. Mostly in cameo roles. And all of the actors and actresses probably jumped at the chance, because they got to play absolutely against type.

That's why Ryoko Shinohara is playing a blonde hooker trying to sneak her way into the hotel. Takako Matsu is playing a rather sharp, house maid who is a single mother. Shingo is a bellboy. And on and on and on.

Lots of fun.

Finally there's some Japanese programming on Australian TV. Next Monday we have Rasen - The Spiral (Ringu sequel), and in a few weeks the Takeshi Sorimachi movie Fulltime Killers.

It ain't much, but it's better than nothing Applaud

I just finished watching "Sugar & Spice":
I don't see why the 'critics' bash this movie in every way they can. Yes there's no shocking events happening, but you can't expect it to be. The start of the movie is too funny, the boys race to the videorental store to rent pr0n ROFL. I won't tell you the reason.

This movie deals with you first love, friendships gone sour because of a girl, dealing with your girlfriend's (rich) ex-bf.

my favorite quote: "if you try on clothes and they don't fit right, you put it back"

especially the 'grandma' played by Mari Natsuki is really cool in this movie and of course there's Erika Sawajiri. Oh, Mayuko Iwasa (the ganguro from GalCircle has a small role too, I barely recognized her without the make up haha)

Hmmm. Having trouble finding a non-torrent download of The Uchoten Hoteru...

*edit* Found an emule link, funny how an emule search didn't bring it up. Googling it with ed2k at the end did it though.

It can be a terrific resource...i've found things there that were absolutely not available anywhere else...clubbox learning curve is pretty steep, but there are some good guides at d-addicts.

[quote="Geezer"]Don

That I know of, Sakuran hasn't made it to the U.S. yet, and I haven't found any downloads for it. But Tu-Triky gave me a heads-up on it, and I caught a couple of the previews on YouTube. Movie looks like a trip.

The only thing that worries me is that the director is a big time photographer, making his first movie. Oh well, fingers crossed... I'm still looking forward to seeing it.

So far, Anna Tsuchiya hasn't done that much to impress me, but IMO any movie that features Miho Kanno, Yoshino Kimura, and Kippei Shina is worth looking for.

Re: Memories of Matsuko... as big a fan of Miki Nakatani as I am (and I am a huge Miki fan) I was very disappointed in that movie. Lots of pretty pictures. And Miki did an outstanding job with what she had to work with. But I thought the movie was scattered & shallow.

Hi Geez, sorry for the late reply. I have to say admit that both movies are not very deep so don't look for a moving experience. That said I think they are entertaining. Both try to tell a story in a way that hasn't been done before (to the best of my knowledge). Memories of Matsuko might be a little over the top in this respect with its mixing of Disneyesque animation, Gone with the Wind titles, musicial numbers that mix hip hop by Bonny Pink with pop and enka by Miki Nakatani (BTW, she's a good singer, isn't she). What holds these films together is your belief in the central character. Here I would say that Miki Nakatani did a better job. But I'd say Anna Tsuchiya was not bad even though I liked her character better in Kamikaze Girls.

what do you mean by 'bash'???

my firend told me that this movie won somethin, whatever it is, but i definitely nearly fell asleep watching it. but i finished until the end anyway.

^
when i saw the renting porn thingi at the beginning, i thought it was gonna be like 69 Sixty Nine, but nah... it gets really mature Beaten with no sex scenes and full of, to me, unbelieveable teenagers ( <- stuffs and relationships like that really happen to people at that age??? )

seen it. not 'WOW'ed. but i cried at one of the parts Beaten

to make it simple, to me, it was a sentimental and a serious version of a Swing Girls-like movie
