Ohisashiburi for a more formal occasion and hisashiburi for a more casual setting i.e. between friends.

If they didn't say it the same way, it could mean they are not on the same social rank or something like that. I could be wrong tho. There are a lot of words and expression you can add "o" at the beginning to make it more polite. bentou ~ obentou, mise ~ omise...


There is one that I know, that is preferable not to use for, is nabe. Nabe is somekind of saucepan / pot, but "onabe" means a female transvestite. (a female that dresses like a man)

There is also the male version, (which is some other kind of saucepan), but I don't remember what is it.

Yup. Also need to know how to say it too. Probably one of those thing to learn last, but there are ways to pronounce words if you don't want to sound like a foreigner.

There are low and high pitch tone. For example, hashi can means different things like chopstick, edge or bridge. For chopstick it's high-low (HAshi), edge and bridge it's low-high (haSHI), but for bridge it's followed by an obligatory low in the next word. Kind of complicated and probably impossible to master, unless you're a native or lived there for many years.

Just as a follow-up to what Tabana said, you also have to listen closely as well, for example: When I first started watching Fuji-TV News, I couldn't figure out why they kept saying "suki desu" before every news story. Did this mean they liked this particular news story? Didn't make any sense. Then I slowly realized what they were saying was, "tsugi desu" meaning, "this is next" Once I finally figured it out, I felt like a total moron

you can say ii desu yo or kekkou desu for OK..

there is actually no literally translation for I miss you in Japanese. They do say.

(name) ga inakute sabishii - I am lonely without you

hold on - ganbare
