I think the reason they specify a certain order is because the kana turn out better and it's meant to be easier to remember.

Check out http://www.tokyomokyo.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=40&Itemid=87 for kana & kanji practice sheets with the correct stroke order shown Smile

Even the English alphabets have a set of stroke orders - you'll know if you even practiced penmanship in primary school.

I'm studying Japanese on my own also.
I have to admit that it's difficult learning by yourself. You dont have a teacher pushing you to do homework and things.

It's also difficult with the lack of Japanese people here (Where I live). I became fluent in Spanish in less than a year because there are many Mexicans here. In school, in the city, in my workplace... So yeah. If it was Japanese people, I would have been fluent a long time ago...

Anyway, I'll be in Japan June 4th for a month. So hopefully It will re enforce everything I've been studying on my own for the past 3 years...

I've been self studying on my own too for about 2 years now!
I understand Japanese , but I can't make up sentences easily, it's not difficult if you put your mind to it and if you know all the Hiragana and Katakana you'll have a very good start.

Although Iv'e been told, " Yeah right! you don't know Japanese, probably you're making up something!" and stuff like that, kinda discouraging but I didn't really care about what People said.

I attented Japanese classes for about a month too, but I quitted 'cause it was of an introductory course and was TOO easy, besides I had to keep up for my studies.

Anyway! Japanese learning is really fun and I can't wait to go to Japan someday to practice it with others there xD !

i think, either a class or on your own. theres only so much you can really learn. if you wanna perfect a language the only real way to do it is to go to that country and spend a lot of time there with people speaking their native tongue.
of course you do need to learn a fair bit first before doing that. i feel you can do that either in a class or on your own. but after a year years of hard studying you need to surround yourself with the language and the only way to do that is to go there.

If I were you, memorize the hiragana and katakana by heart first. Smile

Learning kanji is tough. I only know the really basic ones.

Around 50,000 kanji exist, but don't worry because you would "only" need to know about 1,000 basic kanji to be able to read 90 % of a Japanese newspaper.

But indeed, you should start memorizing hiragana and katakana first.
