I prefer cold turkey between 2 slices of bread. Bleah

There was some company that makes weird drinks, for Seattle IIRC. They had one that tasted like turkey and gravy. bleh

That would be Jones Soda Company.

That must be really weird. I tried gravy chips before and it was realistic and weird, but could be easily made with dried up gravy sauce. On the other hand a turkey and gravy drink... Scary. Sweat

Alcohol damages women's brains faster than men's

By Anne Harding

The brain-damaging effects of alcohol strike women more quickly than men, a new study conducted in Russia confirms.

Female alcoholics performed worse on a number of tests of neurocognitive function compared with males, Dr. Barbara Flannery from RTI International in Baltimore and her colleagues found.

However, Flannery cautioned in an interview with Reuters Health, the findings aren't good news for alcohol-dependent men. "Women are vulnerable to the extent to which they will experience the negative consequences of alcohol abuse and alcoholism more rapidly than men, but men will also experience it -- the same kinds of effects," she said.

Other physiological effects of alcoholism, such as heart and liver damage, are known to occur more quickly in women than in men, a phenomenon known as "telescoping," Flannery and her team note in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.

To determine whether the same occurs in the brain, they had 78 alcoholic men and 24 alcoholic women, between the ages of 18 and 40, complete a series of brain function tests. Sixty-eight non-alcoholic men and women also took part in the study as a control group.

The duration of alcohol use was significantly longer for men than women, at about 15 and 11 years, respectively, as was the duration of alcohol dependence, at 8 and 5 years. A greater percentage of men were college educated and employed full time. However, women reported binge drinking significantly more often than men, at 91 percent vs. 72 percent.

Before completing the tests, all of the alcoholics had been abstinent from alcohol for three to four weeks.

Compared with the alcoholic men, the researchers found that alcoholic women performed worse on tests of visual working memory, cognitive flexibility, and spatial planning and problem solving.

Flannery pointed out that women metabolize alcohol differently than men do. A woman will experience the alcohol effects faster than a man of the same weight. One reason is that men have more water in their bodies, which better dilutes alcohol's effects. Women may also have less of an enzyme that converts alcohol into an inactive substance.

"I think it's important that women understand this," she said, and it's also important to remember that alcoholism is underdiagnosed in men and women. More studies should be done in different populations, she added, to confirm the results.

Brain damage... Yikes. I hope it happens only when you abuse the stuff. Last week it was "Fruity cocktails count as health food" now, it's brain damage. Sweat

That's probably the case.... Like all food and drink, it comes down to moderation and common sense... Which apparently a lot of people don't have. Beaten

Now here is a cool refreshing beverage that will be on sale in Japan this summer. Maybe one day it will make it's way around the world at a store near you.

TOKYO - Japanese are staying cool as a cucumber this summer with "Pepsi Ice Cucumber" — a new soda based on the crisp green gourd.

The soft drink, which hit stores here on Tuesday, doesn't actually have any cucumber in it — but has been artificially flavored to resemble "the refreshing taste of a fresh cucumber," said Aya Takemoto, spokeswoman of Japan's Pepsi distributor, Suntory Ltd.

"We wanted a flavor that makes people think of keeping cool in the summer heat," Takemoto said. "We thought the cucumber was just perfect."

The mint-colored soda is on sale just for the summer and only in Japan, Takemoto said. She said initial sales were brisk, and Suntory aims to sell 200,000 cases over the next three months.

Pepsi trails behind industry leaders Coca Cola (Japan) Company, with about 15 percent of the Japanese cola market, and also faces stiff competition from non-fizzy bottled drinks like green tea and coffee, which are popular here.

Suntory said it sold 20.5 million cases of Pepsi brand drinks in 2006, including its popular Pepsi NEX zero-calorie soda.

It's suppose to taste a bit like a sweet melon.

Anyone knows the retail price of Ito En Oi Ocha green tea (2L bottle)? I drink a lot of this stuff and pay $8 for it. I was just wondering if I was getting screwed or not.

Thanks. Mr Green

hehe

I had the same reaction the 1st time I drank one at home. It smelled and tasted like skunk. A little bit of lime juice does the trick, if you have some.

I did a sampling of this thread and didn't find any mention of champagne. Wow! Please excuse me if I missed it but one of the BEST drink and food combination in the world is CHAMPAGNE & SUSHI. Jumpie It's almost as if both were invented as a complement for the other. IMO, a much better combination for sushi than beer or even nihonshuu. Almost any brut champagne will do even the cheap stuff. I resort to the Italian Pinot Chardonnay that I can get for > 1K JPY when I'm feeling poor but I recommend Taittinger non-vintage brut.

Anyway, you must try this combination. You won't regret it. It's as good as a good Gerwurstraminer with roast turkey. Applaud
