I agree it's nice to indulge in breadth when traveling, but to say Tokyo is a Japanese version of NYC is to marginalize one of the great metropolitan cities of the world. I lived in Manhattan for 3 years AND visited Tokyo...to compare the two cities is to do Tokyo a major disservice. Although New York is one the world's great cities, I found Tokyo to be leaps and bounds more gregarious, interesting, AND cosmpolitan. If you are an urban city slicker....Tokyo leaves EVEN New York in the dust..by a WIDE margin.

Yeah I'm a city guy (I live 12 minutes from Manhattan) and go to college there as well so I understand what you mean by city life. However, I can also see what Mr.ChoyBoi is talking about, is really hard at times to pick up a chick (or guy if you a girl I suppose) in major city traffic and mayhem.
Got to keep those points in mind....

But yeah, I need some ideas guys, come on help me out here hehehe

Thanks you a lot guys, even that bit of info has really helped me already.
Now I know that I will be using my JRPass wayyyyy more hehehe.

Now, what small cities ya recommend then? (also a why would be a nice addition to the list Smile

I lived in Nagoya, and itLs lovely but for a trip I would recommend Kyoto (a must for temples though hehehe) and maybe Osaka/Nagoya on a day trip since theyLre really close to each other. Mind you, with over 1, 2 mill. inhabitants, none of those cities are small. People in Kyoto, although nice, are not always the friendliest and you might get refused in some restaurants (or it takes several visitis before they warm up).
Hiroshima is quite nice too, has a more provincial feel.
I used the Lonely Planet Japan and I found its descriptions quite accurate

It's all about what kinda game you have...I don't care what city you're from or in...when I went to Japan my boy and I took a guided tour of Roppongi Hills and he ended asking the tour guide who attended to us (just so happens it was just her and the two of us during the tour) if she wanted to join us for a drink after she got off the clock and she did!

We also peeled on some chicks that worked for JAL while we were at Club Yellow....don't disparage Tokyo before you've even gone there....I spent about two weeks there and I felt I didn't even scratch the surface and I had a specific list of what to do where to go and such....the women at our hotels the Park Hyatt and Grand Hyatt respectively where hella FINE....so to say the chicks in Toky are busted is straight bullsh*t.

Here Is A List I Had Written Before Of Places I Was Thinking Of Visiting:

-Imperial Palace (come on this is history coming alive)

-Tokyo Tower (In Tokyo so is a must visit however, I'm not going to go up there without a girl hehehe, and also at night <---can you sense the drama fan in me ^_^)

-Sunshine 60 Building (hey if I'm in Tokyo already why not take 2 hours and stop by and take some pics of the tallest building in the world hehe)

-Kairakuen - Mito (not so sure about this one but I hear is a nice garden)

-Nikko (Pagodas, Temples, Gardens) Hear is a good alternative, lots to see, temples and gardens all over, old style Japan.

Other Places Recommend To Me From Some Travel Guides:

-Kanazawa -Famous for Kenrokuen ("Garden of the Six Sublimities")

-Kinkaku-ji - The "Golden Pavilion"

-Kiyomizu-dera - "Pure Water Temple"

-Walk of Philosophy - Start at Ginkaku-ji

I hear these are beautiful:
-Fushimi Inari Shrine -Rows of thousands of classic red torii gates

-Iga Ueno - One of the two biggest schools of the ancient ninja.

However, all of these are the typical places you would find in travel guides and what not overall I want to get the nice hang out spots and whatnot. Tu_triky you seem to know your stuff pretty darn well, I will be sending ya a PM Victory! Peace!

Not that the places you have mentioned are bad...but you seemed to have organized a trip for the geriatric crowd (65 yrs. old and up)....if you wanna see fine chicks and hip places you are definitely digging in the wrong place. i think you need to check out places like Shibuya, Roppongi, Ginza, Shinjuku, Akihabara, Aoyama, Tsukiji (the biggest fish market in the world!) and Daikanyama to name a few....especially given your age.

2 of them seem very useful already.

I don't think I have enough time though to read all of those but I will see how I will manage.

I didnt mean it in that way. I was just trying to say its pretty much big city life with lots of technology. Mr Green I think visiting the country side of Japan would be a lot more interesting and a change of pace from the big city life.

Agreed. You gotta get the flavor by going off the beaten path. I'm sure you'll have a blast! And then some.

Even within Tokyo you can get away from the frenetic pace of the big life and the big city....read the following article, it's pretty fascinating Smile

I've heard about places like the ones in the article. I've even seen a show on BBC telling tourists where some of the places Japanese people go to relax. One that struck me was an indoor fishing pond. Its just a stick with some bait on the end of the string. How much fun can you have? rofl and its tiny little fishes too....

I love how BBC always has shows about Japan. Have you ever seen Japanorama? Its a pretty good show. Kinda funny at times. Of course hosted by a british man.

Yeah that show is fairly hilarious. In fact I have the most recent season on my hard drive but I haven't seen it yet. Some of his news/trend reporting is behind the times but nonetheless fun and interesting to watch.

Like they say, it's easier to meet people in a weather station in Antarctica, then a metropolis. Puppy Dog Eyes

If you go in a small town with 10 000 souls, you might get lot of attention, cause they probably don't get many foreign tourists, but a lot of legal age girls and boys move to the big cities each year to study. Wink

Not the 1st time I've heard that one. It seems they don't even like non-Kyotoites. Seriously, I don't get it why you get refused to go into restaurants. Unless you're dressed like crap and try to go into a 5 star restaurant, they should let everybody in. Grumble
