Well, actually, I haven't received anything myself on my personal accounts. If I was only watching my accounts, I would have never known about the viruses. The way I found out is that overnight, my SMTP server was flooded with thousands of e-mails, and it brought the server's queue down to a screeching halt.

Good ole eudora. It's done enough pattern matching for me to autodetect suspicious email and junk them for me.

If you think putting your email in your profile is bad enough..

Imagine for [email protected] Bleah Changed not long ago, but already collecting loads of junk mail - coz its on every page of JDorama.com!

For those using NAV, how do you configure it to scan incoming emails and delete virus attachments automatically? Can't seem to find the option... now I have to click everytime it clears a virus. (so u know what happens when I get loads of virus infested emails...)

Alternatively.. anyone recommends a nice email client? Thinking of Eudora.. how's it?

I highly recommend only publishing obfuscated email addresses on websites to foil the spam address harvesters. (See http://istpub.berkeley.edu:4201/bcc/Winter2003/feat.spamharvest.html, especially the sections "3.1. Use alternate methods of representing characters" and "3.4 Add legal but unusual elements")

I started using obfuscated mail addresses on my website a couple years ago, and my spam has dropped off since then.

The only reason I don't make my email visible in my profile on this site is that I don't want my address harvested for spam ... but if it was published in an obfuscated form, that would be okay.

Good luck.

On all of my web pages, I plug the following code for my e-mail address:

Code:
<script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"><!--
var x="function f(x){var i,o=\"\",l=x.length;for(i=0;i<l;i+=2) {if(i+1<l)o+=" +
"x.charAt(i+1);try{o+=x.charAt(i);}catch(e){}}return o;}f(\"ufcnitnof x({)av" +
" r,i=o\\\"\\\"o,=l.xelgnhtl,o=;lhwli(e.xhcraoCedtAl(1/)3=!93{)rt{y+xx=l;=+;" +
"lc}tahce({)}}of(r=i-l;1>i0=i;--{)+ox=c.ahAr(t)i};erutnro s.buts(r,0lo;)f}\\" +
"\"(5)12\\\\,Y\\\"[Q|v=cft62:>'u::p%'.l;'.<i'$*11,00\\\\\\\\77\\\\1b\\\\4c03" +
"\\\\\\\\1a00\\\\\\\\V^QM6C02\\\\\\\\27\\\\0h\\\\@T6^03\\\\\\\\KDKHKHhD26\\\\"+
"06\\\\02\\\\\\\\25\\\\0A\\\\CGTS$uhrswuxJ5r(`v0y2n$/~nz`(pjqofct21\\\\01\\\\"+
"03\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\f(;} ornture;}))++(y)^(iAtdeCoarchx.e(odrChamCro.fngriSt+" +
"=;o27=1y%){++;i<l;i=0(ior;fthnglex.l=\\\\,\\\\\\\"=\\\",o iar{vy)x,f(n ioct" +
"un\\\"f)\")"                                                                 ;
while(x=eval(x));
//--></script>

Basically, it's a Javascript that allows web browsers to display your e-mail address but doesn't allow spammers to scrape them up. On my e-mail addresses that use this code, I don't receive any spam. I'll find the web site later that generates this type of code for any e-mail address. Then, you can paste it into your web page's HTML.

Love it. Been using it for 5 years. What I like best in their latest version is their junk mail detection. It's not perfect, but you can get it to near perfect by teaching it what's junk and what's not.

And after 15 or so system formats and 5 OSes. I still have all 5 years worth of email on my computer.

I'm using Microsoft Outlook 2002, protected by Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 8.1.1 (all U.S. DoD employees receive a free license for their home PCs) and Symantec Norton AntiSpam. All of Symantec's antivirus products (both Corp Ed and consumer editions) scan for viruses within Microsoft Outlook.

The Norton AntiSpam product is very highly recommended. Besides spam filtering, it also features anti-ad filtering and anti-popup filtering. All the filters are updated on a regular basis via free updates from Symantec's web site. The spam filtering doesn't rely solely on conditional filtering like Eudora. Though part of the filtering is conditional, it also filters based on known spammers and open-relay servers via its internal database.

And, I believe HostDepartment.com provides antivirus filtering on all of their accounts (I'm assuming you're using their e-mail services for JDorama.com e-mail). There was also an announcement just a few days ago where all of their servers will be upgraded when they move to their California NOC. Included in the upgrade will be spam filtering. So you can filter spam at the server, rather than download the spam and delete it on your PC.

I think this thread is running off the wrong track. There are too many myths here, so I need to explain how this stuff all works. First off, your e-mail address being on web pages is NOT the reason why you get e-mail viruses. If you do not believe me, go to the Symantec web site and read the technical documents on each of today's viruses: MyDoom, Netsky, and Beagle.

The key to an effectively written virus is for the receipient to feel comfortable about the sender. That's why e-mail viruses do not obtain e-mail addresses off the web... If viruses scraped e-mail addresses off the web, the receipient then wouldn't recognize the sender. The key to the virus spreading well is for people to open the e-mail and run the attachments. So the myth about "I'm getting e-mail viruses because my address is on the web" is just that -- a myth. No, the reason why you're getting e-mail viruses is because someone out there placed your e-mail address somewhere on his/her PC.

By design, the e-mail viruses like MyDoom, Netsky, and Beagle gather their e-mail addresses from two places: address lists created by e-mail clients, and the hard disk. For example, if you stuck a file called readme.txt onto your hard disk containing the e-mail address [email protected], the virus will find the file, pull that e-mail address from the file, and then add it to its list of people to spam.

So if you REALLY want to cut down the amount of viruses you receive via e-mail, tell all of your friends/business associates/family to pull all of your e-mail addresses off of their PCs, especially their address lists. On my PC at home I have ABSOLUTELY no address lists. Zero! I either memorize the addresses, or I look them up on my PDA.

If you want to avoid spam, yes by all means remove your e-mail addresses off the web. However, don't mix up e-mail viruses with traditional spam.

Why do I know all this? I used to write viruses in a controlled environment in college back in the late 1980's-early 1990's. And, my company is one of the major technical partners with Symantec, where I help identify viruses and their characteristics before the rest of the world hear about them. Which is why I knew about Beagle.J and Beagle.K hours before there were AV updates to kill them.
