Sony apologizes for using cathedral in violent video game

LONDON (Kyodo) The European video game unit of Sony Corp. has apologized for using a British cathedral as a backdrop in a gory computer game, the Church of England said Friday.

David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd., said in a letter to the Rev. Rogers Govender of Manchester Cathedral, "It was not our intention to cause offense by using a representation" of the cathedral in the PlayStation 3 game "Resistance: Fall of Man."

"If we have done so, we sincerely apologize," Reeves said.

Cathedral bosses have been calling on Sony's European video game unit to withdraw the game and to delete all scenes relating to the cathedral.

"We thank Sony for the apology they have made," Govender said. "However, we do not move from the position that we are against violence and especially the gun violence seen in this portrayal of the cathedral."

Govender said a meeting between the cathedral and Sony is planned and the cathedral will "discuss our outstanding demands, how this game came to be produced and where the images of the cathedral came from."

The game is about an alien attack on 1950s Britain.

Govender said the game has "undermined" the work that the Church of England institution has done in trying to combat gun crime in Manchester.

In the letter, Sony denied any connection between current issues in Manchester and the content of the video game.

Sony considers dropping PS3 price

A price cut for the PlayStation 3 got closer to reality today. Sony chairman and chief executive Sir Howard Stringer has told the Financial Times he is aware that there is "no question" that consumers want a lower price tag.
Stringer praised the success of rival Nintendo's latest console, the Wii, saying that the company "has been a successful enterprise and a very good business model compared with ours". He vehemently disagreed, however, that the Wii was more fun to play. "No, no, no, no," the executive replied to the question.
He also attributed much of the difference in sales between the two consoles to the fact that the Wii was significantly cheaper, and that the two systems were "complementary and supplementary", to each other, and not in direct competition.
In light of this, Stringer confirmed that Sony would be looking to cut the price of the PS3 -- he gave no specific amount, but indicated that the company was looking to make a decision about this before Christmas. He said, "[The amount of the price cut] is what we are studying at the moment. That's what we are trying to define."
Stringer said that he "was not worried" about the PS3 at all. "While [it seems] people haven't bought as many PS3s, it is no different from the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation in terms of sales," he said. He pointed out that the PS3 was following the sales path of the previous two consoles, both of which over time ended up with market dominance.
He added that current games for the console were using only 20 per cent or so of the machine's capabilities. "Once they use the full bandwidth the games experience is stunning... it's dazzling."

Didn't good ol Ken said $599 was too cheap? and that we'd have to work harder to earn money to buy the machine. Or that people would buy a PS3 blindly, even if there were literaly no games out? Doh!

Now they are like, oh right: we just discovered that cheaper things sell easier! what a genius.

When companies announce a pricedrop, it will never be more than $50,-
"we are currently studying how much the price should descrease" THE MORE THE BETTER! idiots...

hell I wouldn't buy the machine if they dropped it to $400 right now. And for starters: let them include a Component Cable and/or HDMI cable bleh

Went to buy a game the other day for the 360 and they didn't have it. I came out with a Wii. Beaten

So far, the graphics aren't much better than the Gamecube, but the rest is fun. I wouldn't play a driving game on it, cause it looks dated, but sports games are fun. I hurt my shoulder playing baseball. Sweat

There's nothing much on their online store, only a few games, but for $10 to play Super Mario World or $6 for Donkey Kong, might as well buy the GBA version for almost the same price. At least, you own the game. =T

They still need lots of good games. Since most of the exclusives (FF, Metal Gear, GT5...) will be released in the fall of 2008, I'm not rushing to buy one.

I have a 360 and a wii, although the wii needs good games too. I'm not going to spend $80 to play cooking mama. Sweat

Oh, youLre a Calibur fan, too? Mr Green
I canLt wait to get hands on SC4, too. I just hope itLll get better (more) than the last one(s) The best are still Soul Edge and the first Calibur on the Dreamcast.
They really need to work a little in direction of DoA. With destroyable areas in the stages, multi platform stages etc. Only the old Soul Calibur, with better graphics, 2 new characters and stages wonLt do again...

I guess they got scared and actually listened hehe
$100 is a great pricedrop and that within a year, still too expensive IMO, but hey it's a start.

And I never said I hated PS3, or Sony, I have both a PS1 and 2 so I'm really not biased. I just hate their godlike PS3 attitude (especially Ken with his ridiculous statements). Treating us gamers like mindless fanboys. I guess we'll have to thank Nintendo and their Wii for putting Sony back to earth.

Now it's interesting to see what MS decides to do. as far as I know they never had a pricecut on the 360 yet, they could easily drop the price with $100 as a reponse to Sony.

I second that. The PS3 is a nice console, no question about that. And ILll get one some day for sure. But I donLt like SonyLs attitude very much, too. And The 360 is just the better choice at the moment. ItLs cheaper, the games look more or less the same (often even better on the 360 for many of the first games)
The PS3 might have a bit more graphics power. But that wonLt show much, I think. Maybe in some exclusives but like 90% of all games, which come out on PS3 and 360, will look more or less the same. It was the same with the first XBox and the PS2 already. Developers wonLt program the game all over again for another console.
The PS3 is just too expensive at the moment and there are absolutly no interesting games out. All just old stuff that was released on PC or 360 before and the exclusive games are nothing worth mentioning. ItLll change with Metal Gear, GT5 and games like that. But those are faaaar away from releasing.

Odd. From what i've seen, wrinkles aren't a problem with Japanese women - until they are well past video game age, anyway Bleah

You're ok if you're over 25 and not single. After that, you need to use the face training game or Kenshuui Tendo Dokuta to fix here and there. Bonk

My favorite characters?
Female: Taki
Male: Siegfried/Nightmare
AND my own created character
