Yeah but even then...we only see a FRACTION of what they actually produce....if you ever go there...you will see how much stuff never makes it to our shores, even though we have one of the largest consumer markets in the world. When I went to the Sony Building in Ginza, I saw tons of stuff that was light years ahead of the stuff we see here...

Trade restrictions with the U.S.?
well honestly i don't think it's a legal issue...it's a marketing decision based on the technological "savoir faire" of the japanese which is much greater than us folks here. their appetite and sensitivity to all things gadgetry is just much greater.

I think it may be a case of old-habits-die-hard. During the economic growth (some would say runaway) of the 60's and early 70's a lot of effort was put into promoting high-priced quality products, and being seen using such products was the sign of success for many. As a result Japanese companies spent enormous amounts in product development, or rather product refinement as the Japanese were in the habit of taking inventions from other and improve on it. Cost was not much of an issue then.
What the Japanese came up with did not necessarily agree with overseas markets. For instance the Japanese were hell bent on miniaturizing anything they can get there hands on - small hands. The Americans, the biggest market at the time, with much larger average body size probably couldn't get use to these small products until much later.
Then of course there is the Japanese theological belief that they are a superior race - maybe that's why they got along so well with the Germans during the World War era.

Amazon Japan has shipped stuff to me in the U.S....?
That's because there are offered by other through the Amazon Market Place. In this case Amazon only handles the transfer of funds, it is up to the seller to organize shipment.
