Has anyone else besides me watched this show?

Broadcast in English on NHK, it provides a wealth of information about Japanese culture and society.

Typically, each week a specific subject is explored in detail with an invited expert who appears in-studio with the two co-hosts. There is also an "out and about" segment where a reporter goes to a locale which has something of interest. And there is also a short music video shown as well.

I wish! I don't get NHK as a channel on my current Direct TV package.

yeah but it's only broadcast certain segments here not continuously on a devoted channel

edit: So has anybody aside from shin2 seen this program...sounds interesting. i wonder if there are torrents?

Didn't find any. It seems it's broadcasted on NHK World. Only found on google vid and it's about poetry.

no i'm just saying NHK isn't in my bundle of channels...I don't have any subscriptions to additional packages other than HBO & other movie channels such as STARZ. it's expensive enough as it is.

The reason I ask is that it airs lots of NHK programming. In fact, the majority of it is NHK. On the schedule, it's called Begin Japanology, hosted by Dionne Mitsuoka and Peter Barakan.

that's cool..but i don't watch much TV outside a few regular cable channels and HBO....for me, from a cost benefit perspective i won't find it worth it to subscribe additionally to TV JAPAN. most of the japanese programming i find interesting is floating around in cyberspace

You can find Begin Japanology and a bunch of other NHK programs in English and Japanese on NHK World TV. They are non-scrambled broadcasts, so anyone with a satellite dish can receive them. They show you how here.

Since I don't have a satellite dish, subscribe to TV Japan, or download programs, I acquire these episodes through other means ($$).

These are the current co-hosts. Peter Barakan is an Englishman who has lived, worked, and raised a family in Japan for decades. Dionne Mitsuoka, who grew up in Japan in a bilingual household, has only recently come on as the newest co-host.

The reporters in the "out and about" segments which I mentioned in my initial post are all gaijin who live and work in Japan and are fluent Japanese speakers.

The guest experts brought in to the studio are usually native Japanese who speak English. Occasionally you'll get a gaijin expert like the American who runs a 100-year-old miso factory (he married into the family business) or another American who is one-half of a manzai comedy team (they perform their schtick in English or Japanese depending on the audience).

The program is very eclectic in its subject matter. For example, on one episode, there were segments on Japanese stationery, model trains, and oyaji bands (groups of middle-aged men and women who gather together to play classic rock and roll). This pairing of contrasting subjects in one show is done a lot on this program: dashi (soup stock) and shiso (lion-dog statues); primates and dodge ball; soba making and kimono contests; koi and flea markets; traditional Asakusa shops and magician performances--I think you get the gist.

but there are some that i watch, like Top Runner where i first saw YUI perform,, and this drama starring Chiyaki Kuriyama,, and sometimes, the pro-baseball,,

i'm just wondering how come there are no animes nor tokusatsus there...

i think theres two version of NHK.. the original NHK (only in Japan), and the premium one (Japan and international).. the one airing in our country is the premium. correct me if im wrong.

i thought everyone who lives in SE Asia can get Astro/Indovision etc. right?
for Rp300.000/month (right now, about US$30 /month) you can get it. includes others like Animax, Celestial (for east asian movies. Includes japanese movies), HBO, Star World/movies/sports, ESPN, Nick, MTV, V, Fashion TV and many more... and of course NHK.
And if you get the right provider, it can also come with an unlimited internet access.

but i don't understand japanese anyway, so i don't get what the shows that airs in NHK is about. i've seen that music show called music japan or somethin' (trust me, it's much worse than Music Station, seriously). Last time i saw a NHK show in english that plays PVs. i forgot the title. but it's not up to date and focuses more on what's special about the artiste.

but i've never seen this show. not that i can remember.
