It might be the case that Verizon is trying to go 100% FIOS. Look into that. You'll get better bandwidth and cheaper costs.
You've heard of Verizon's 20/20, right? 20Mb/s down and 20Mb/s up. It pales in comparison to the modern countries. But it the best the USA has right now. And it's only $64 a month. caveat: It's not nation wide yet, and if you happen to live in an AT&T (federally mandated) area, you're screwed.
But anyway, I suspect that Verizon's main focus is on FIOS and not DSL any more. Perhaps that's why you're getting shabby service.

They dug up the street several months ago to run FIOS lines throughout the neighborhood, but I ain't paying $64/month for that.. Like in the case for DSL, I'm gonna wait for the price to come to me, not the other way around.
And for Verizon to abandon their DSL users would be pretty stupid, since you'd think DSL is still their bread and butter service....

Fiber is the only upgrade path right now. DSL is dead. Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sweden, France, etc. ... all moving to 100% fiber. Verizon has the lead here in the USA. But it's political.
Why don't we have 150Mbs down and 100Mbs up like they do in Osaka and Kobe? I called to complain (yeah, I live in an AT&T area). They said it's laws pertaining to setting up the infrastructure.
While you're downloading dramas from d-addicts take a look at which clients are uploading you the most (provided that your downstream isn't capped at 6Mb/s or less). The Japanese, Thailand, Singapore, France, guys are pumping out 300Mb/s to to you. And probably to other people at the same time. This isn't Commercial or "Content Provider" users. It's regular people that live in countries that have invested in information technology.

If they don't wanna support DSL, they shouldn't offer it in the first place and spam my e-mail AND snailmail box constantly with deals on 3Mbit/6Mbit service. |
OK, I see where you are coming from now. It's a value issue pertaining to your certain requirements.
It's hard to say when "generic" fiber optics will be available the same way as $9.99 dial-up is. It's probably going to be dependent, once again, on politics. Right now it would appear to the casual observer that the USA is intentionally "dumbing" it's population down. There's really no need for Information Technology in the USA since the new focus is on a service/war economy. High-Speed Internet with Hi-Def capability at a barbar shop or a fast food restuarant is pointless.

I'm wondering if this has to do with jumping onto someone's internet connection at work the other day. I was able to go online and download a large file, but yesterday and today when I tried going online at home, I can't connect at all.
I hope someone will be able to help me because I need to do a bunch of things on my crappy desktop and it's going to be hard to go online with it at the same time. |
Have you tried using a wire rather than wireless?

Yes, I have, but it's too inconvenient because I don't keep my laptop in just one area. Besides, I haven't had problems with it for almost a year now. This is the first time it's really given me trouble. _________________

Well, if it's your only choice.....
I'm guessin' that since you locked in to a different wireless connection, Windows is choosing that one as your default... You need to get into your Network Connections and choose your home wireless connection as your default... I think.
dochira or G-Mark would know...

The problem is that I can't even find my wireless connection. It shows some unsecured wireless networks I can log on to, but not mine. I have no idea where my network went and how i can get it back. _________________

Here's a silly question: is your wireless hub turned on?
Maybe your wireless connection is down for some reason.
