What kind?

The Canon I want is a digital SLR... Much more versatile than my current five-year old, 2MP Canon...

Actually, we have a non-digital Pentax SLR. Mrs A.D. is getting a Canon 7MP unit for Christmas, around $180. Looks to be a good unit.

We bought a 3.4MP Canon here at work about 5 years ago. It was over $1700 back then - now it looks clunky and it's as heavy as, compared to the new ones Smile

Yeah, I've got a Canon 35mm SLR that I bought back in 1987... Can't remember the last time I used that thing. Sweat

It's amazing how digital cameras have taken hold: Kodak pulled the plug on selling film here in the States, leaving all the business to FujiFilm...

It's no wonder: It costs around 13 - 15 cents to print a digital photo, compared to about $15 to develop and print a 24-exposure film.

Big difference!

Not to mention the time saved...

I guess eventually film development shops will eventually disappear as well. Sweat

Don't forget with digicams, you don't have to print out bad pictures.

A Japan junket?

Fascinating idea.

Didn't we discuss this already over PM? What happened to that idea?

It's already started to disappear. I run a Darkroom from work and it's almost impossible to get chems and photopaper in bulk. At one time I had to order paper from America because no one carried it anymore here. Thankfully Blacks is carrying photopaper and other supplies, but for schools ONLY.

Dragging an old thread up...

We went to a presentation by landscape photographer Ken Duncan on the weekend www.kenduncan.com He had a 15m wide screen to display his panoramic landscape photos on... the photos are amazing! He was saying that while he has digital cameras (including a 60 megapixel unit Shocked ) his panoramic cameras use film, and he prefers film cameras.

Judging by the sales of his books afterwards, he makes a good living from it too.

Most purist photogs do.

But the trend is clearly digital: Kodak doesn't even sell film here in America anymore... Only Fujifilm does.

Go figure. Sweat

Yea, I run a darkroom at work, and for a while there it was really difficult to get photo paper and chemicals, since even those who still use film tend to get them developed instead of doing it themselves. The market for this stuff is okay now. I can get photo paper, etc. easily, tho the prices have gotten a bit high. Sweat

On the other note, we bought my brother a DSLR and his pictures are amazing. I'm planning on looking for some decent lens when I'm in Japan. I think they'll be cheaper there.
