So I was watching Trick 2, episode 6 and patiently waiting for Shiro to come on. Nope, nada, zip, zilch, no Shiro to be found. Then I watch the 7th episode and there he is, clad in vampire gear. That and his little dance move made up for the letdown of him not being in episode 6. _________________
Did you guys know that the reason slapstick is called slapstick, is because once upon a time stage comics used a large wooden paddle with a long piece of leather attached to the back.
The comic would swing the large paddle at his partner, and stop just short of actually hitting him. But the piece of leather attached to the back of the paddle (picture a wide belt) would swing forward and hit the back of the paddle, making a very loud slapping sound. (Hence, it was called a "slapstick")To the audience it seemed like -- sounded like -- the comic had really slapped his partner with the paddle.
Slapstick comedy is all very physical, all very fast, very simple, and very very broad. You wouldn't have to understand the language to enjoy a good slapstick performance.
A "Screwball" comedy is a different kettle of fish. That's why they created a new term to describe it. It's fast, and there are elements of physical comedy in it. But it borrows more from farce than slapstick. Screwball comedies are all about situation, snappy patter, and confusion.
Farce... heck, there are dozens of books in any library that'll explain farce better than I ever could.
Want to see where it started? Laurent Tirard's "Moliere" just came out on DVD. Or if you'd rather stick with English, rent "Noises off" 1992. It's farce. It's physical. But it ain't slapstick.
lol you beat me to it. And you're perfectly right.
I just finished teaching my Comedy unit for my Film and Video class, and I'd prolly give you an A for your explanation.
And just another note: screwball is also predominantly assoicated with romantic comedies, and can be considered a sub-genre of comedy... whereas slapstick is more a comedic style.

Now... as to "Pride" being a Romantic comedy? I think Ralph's allowed to call it anything he dang well pleases. But to be honest, I think Kimura would be insulted to hear "Pride" being called a comedy. But that's just my guess.
Agreed. I didn't find it comedic at all.
Last night I watched episodes 1-4 of Churasan 2. This sequel ROCKS! A lot more focus on family and extended family. I LOVE it! _________________

For me comedic implies not serious... light.... fluffy etc. versus non comedic as in Crying Out Love In the Center Of The World. Now that's a non comedy romance. How else would Pride be categorized - simply as a romance? It's certainly not in the sad romance category.
I'm rewatching Churasan 2 also. I just am amazed at how often any Churasan can be re-viewed without the least hint of boredom.

Have you noticed yet that the theme song is sung by Eri? In fact she sings the theme song in all the sequels. I hope you get a chance to watch the Kuninaka demo. It has all 3 theme songs in full as music videos with Eri singing as well as a very interesting sequence of the making of the music videos. Also you will see Kuninaka Ryoko very much as she is in the real world. Uber charming and beautiful as always.

Pride is just a romance/drama. It's not a comedy at all, so yea, I'd just call it a romance. Comedy romance would be... Kekkon, Nodame, Anna-san... etc, where there is evident comedy mixed wtihin the romantic story. Pride was not intended to be a comedy, and therefore it shouldn't be called one. It's misleading. It's a romance.

I saw the promo before starting Churasan, and when I put in the sequel, I recognized the song immediately!!
I think I'll continue with Churasan 2, epi 5 now. _________________
and though I can't call it a "great" show, I will say it was a wonderful show. An absolute joy to watch.
It was something of a screwball comedy. Some might even call it cartoonish. I just looked at it as a chance for some remarkable, serious, professional actors... to cut loose and have some fun. To do the silly.
From my point of view, it's a shame that Tanaka Misako is so good at the "good woman"... "good wife" ... "good mother" serious, melo-dramatic parts. It means I have to bypass more than half of her dramas.
But when she does a comedy... I'm there. This woman can take the silliest of material, and make it work.
For my money, she's up at the top of the mountain with Yamaguchi Tomoko and Asano Atsuko. (And for the older crowd... Irene Dunne.) _________________
...This one was pretty good, but it dragged a lot and had an obvious ending...
Ishida Hikari was luminous... she doesnt look anything like her sister. _________________
One episode in and so far I think I'm gonna enjoy it.
It's written to a rather classic formula; Wide Eyed innocent comes to the big city to fight for justice... to become the kind of noble lawyer he read about as a child, and saw in the movies.
And of course he's paired up with a cynical, money grubbing, ambulance chaser who introduces him to the real world of the legal profession.
I expect the "Scum" Lawyer to turn out to have a heart of gold toward the end. A bit tarnished... but certainly gold.
Oh well... you can't have everything. _________________
