I wish I knew a little more about the shows that these celebs are appearing on... Is is purely to promote their movies/dramas or is there also monetary benefit?

Yeah...I'm not big on American tv either....I usually stick to discovery, PBS, history international, or rarely sci-fi (new battlestar galactica).
