Ah, thanks for clearing that up for me. I really had no idea.
Oh...I bought Final Fantasy XII - but resold it because it was too complicated for me to work out how to play properly.
I probably shouldn't admit that, but nevermind.
FFXII is not turn based. They have a new gambit system that allows you to set for actions and then priortize them, up to 12 at the end of the game.
So you can have Fran "heal" a friendly character if their HP drops "<30%". This can have a higher priority than attacking, so she will stop attacking to heal a character. If you do it right, your characters will act on their own following your orders. Some people hated that, but after I figured out how it worked, I liked it. Every character had a "personality/job class" based on how I set them up.
FFX is turn based. FFX-2 has an active battle turn system like VII where if you do not input anything, the enemy will still attack. A true turn based game like FFX or the Shin Megami Tensei games will stop at your turn. You could take a nap, and it'll still be waiting. (I've done that.)
It's too bad you didn't like FFXII. I found it one of the best games I've ever played. Took me over 100 hours to finish.

Thank you for explaining about RPGs some more.
Well, I might actually have liked FFXII if I could only have got my head around how to play. I just found it totally confusing. Maybe because I've never played any RPGs before. Or maybe having played previous FF games might have helped..?
Btw, you guys that play RPGs - did you get the hang of them easily? And why would you recommend them?
I have a long wire, but the hub is upstairs in bro's room, and family room (where I'm housing the Xbox) is in the extreme oppposite corner of the house on the ground floor. _________________

Okay, a really long wire... Ethernet cables can run a pretty long distance, y'know... Unless it's not an Ethernet cable you're talking about.

There is a wireless option for the 360; for $100. Clearly overpriced, but it works fine. The only problem was it didn't work with WPA2, for some reason. We had to reconfigure the router for WPA instead. I prefer the wire.
There's a free game on xbox marketplace, undertow(?), available for the next few hours. After that, it'll be back to $10. _________________

Nah, I'm talking about the Ethernet cable. The longest one I have wasn't long enough. I might have to get the wireless... or relocate the xbox.

O cool! Tho it'll take me longer than a few hours to get the net connection set up. _________________

just give it up . the whole gambit system was the lousy-est thing those FF makers could ever come up with. Leave it for dinner or even throwing crap in the toilet and your characters will still be leveling up by itself. the shape of the summons was a total turn off, and the characters look way too metrosexual.
just play the previous. which is more fun. PS2 right? try FFX, or maybe the FFX-2 which is the 'girly-est' FF _________________

Yeah. FFXII looks really scary. I wanted to play it, but got scared of the bare chested guy with his funky pose. He makes Kame look virile as Rambo. _________________

I guess I got the hang of them pretty easily, but I played D&D with my friends when I was in HS. FFVII was my first Japanese RPG back in 1997, and I figured out the basics pretty easily. The way they work just makes sense to me most of the time.
I play JRPGs for the characters and stories. I can handle a weaker game system if I'm enjoying the story. I still remember the end of the first disc in FFVII. I had never had that happen before in a game, and I thought I had done something wrong! I enjoy tactics over reflexes so I tend to enjoy the turn-based games a bit more. The Shin Megami Tensei series is very good, but not for the beginner. If you make a mistake the game witll punish you, but you can exploit the enemy as well. Battles can turn south in an second, and there is an insta-death spell (Mudo) that can Game Over in one hit.
I loved the Xenosaga series for the stories and the characters, but some hated the long cut scenes. FFVII, FFVIII, X, XII I found to be excellent. X-2 is like "Spira's Angels" as you play 3 girls the whole time, and Rikku decided to dress down for some reason. Having played a Final Fantasy does not give you a great advantage for the next one as they tend to change things (like the hated gambit system in XII), but they keep the same spell names (so far on the PS2 games). Cura in X is Cura in XII so the learning curve is a bit easier. I loved Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria and Persona 3; very unique gameplay in P3 with the high school social life you have to cultivate. There are always tedious things about any game, but they usually don't bother me too much. I could go on, but you've probably stopped reading by now.
ALrighty, so it took me a good chunck of the morning to set up the Xbox (okies, abotu less than an hour, but still). I got it hooked on the High Def TV, along with the DVD player and Rogers Cable box, so everything is in working order!
The games look AMAZING on HDTV!
Using a cable to access the internet is impossible due to the location of hte console and the hub, so I'm gonna have to go the wireless route. I prolly won't be able to go out and purchase the wireless adaptor until next week tho.
In the meantime, I think I'll start Oblivion. I finised Eternal Sonata (end was a bit disappointing) but I'll play it all about with a guide to access all the stuff I missed.
Of course, I won't be able to do any of this until I'm done marking. >_< _________________

LOL. that dude is seriously the most unattractive lead in a FF game. My friends who plays FFXII never uses that dude. and yeah the pose for the poster is seriously
and also in FFXII, the secret boss which has whatever-million HP you'll take like more than 4 hours to beat. but you don't have to control a thing. so leave it to do whatever you do. and then after 5 hours you check and it's either "crap! game over" or you win. so press the reset button and leave it again
i don't play it. but it's always funny when my friends tell me about FFXII _________________
