No, not necessarily. Not everyone who displays a chick is a dude and not everyone who displays a dude is a chick.
And no, it is not in order to express which star you are in love with.
Look at my sig and avatar, do you think I like an IKA? Or even that chick in my avatar? (even though she IS pretty fine) but no. I'm all over Uchiyama Rina.
Avatars and sigs are all about the "mood" you're in.
Are you a girl or guy? If you were a guy, I'd think you're gay with your avatar. If not, then hey, as the majority of users here, you don't post pics of the same sex as you. Pretty much common sense.
