I don't suspect they would or could do it, but it would be amazing to see the story artfully turn around to support Sousuke in a way that the audience could accept.
They have the time to do so, and I'm hoping they prove me wrong. It's just that at this point, all we see is an abusive guy who offers kids pastries, wears a suit and tie nearly everytime he's on screen, runs after taxis and apparently has a deep, infuriating hatred towards liars, and girlfriends who don't show up on time. Hard to sympathize just yet. Dig deeper into his tortured soul, if he has one, and perhaps he could just be seen as a tragic consequence of what happens when parents aren't around. Perhaps then viewers can sympathize with him, or at least understand more of his character. Who knows, perhaps the pastry scene is the door opening to that point, and we'll get more layers of Sousuke's character. That'd be sweet to say the least. Certainly they're trying to portray him as more than a one-dimensional character, but it just hasn't worked so far.
I thought that was what roon was implying... mebbe I misread.
A little bit of misreading. While the episode was definitely slow and accomplished nothing until the very end (which isn't much of an accomplishment, since viewers probably picked up on it way back), I thought a second viewing made me appreciate the pace a little more. Granted, I knew about it beforehand... but I digress.
Also, I'm still hoping that the added episode means they're going to incorporate the "present" story. It would really suck if they left things hanging at these amazingly depressing flashbacks, so I'm holding out for an ending that takes place long after these events. If not the 7-9 months after the flashbacks, then sometime after to see what everyone is doing with their lives.

The writer and director have had more than ample time to flesh out some of the characters, but they're too busy scratching the surface for six episodes...
This drama's starting to turn into a Chinese meal: after you're done watching, one hour later, you're hungry again.

Which is a shame really, since the ingredients (the actors) are of excellent quality.

So.... although the second viewing made you appreciate it, it still wasn't up to par with the others, right?
I'll have to watch it myself to see, because personally I felt the fourth episode was weaker than the first three. _________________

LOL.
Let's hope the ship gets righted in the next episode or two... Time's a wastin'...
Or... the ingredient balance is, well, rebalanced - to follow the current metaphor, you nauticaphillic (we'll assume that means you like sailing...) _________________

Watching EP 6 RAW~
For some reason the soft subs aren't working for this episode.
Make sure they aren't named something with a weird character or are nested in any directory with a strange character or the original video's name contains a peculiar character - that will make them act funky.
Change the names to "Last Friends - Ep. 06" for both and it'll most likely work like a champ _________________

Ack, I changed the names and moved the files around, but the subs still aren't showing up, which is weird because I've tried subs for other episodes on ep6 and they show up fine.
