I actually took a look at their reasoning behind Ryo's acting. The phrase "you don't know what you don't know" comes to mind. Folks who think Ryo's acting was great have no idea what great, or even average, acting is. First off, people don't hate Sousuke because Ryo's acting convinced us to. We hate him because his character wasted our time. The only thing Sousuke convinced us to do was fast forward through his parts, but we didn't because we were expecting it to lead somewhere. But it didn't, so not only did we waste our time, we learned we could have skipped it altogether! Second, Ryo didn't pull off the role. There was nothing to pull off. He wasn't convincing or believable. What he did was not suck at it. If your standard for great acting is "not sucking", then Ryo did a great job. Some of these people would consider a photobook great drama.

nice! a clear argument on how average his acting skills were.
I can't judge his performance though since I didn't watch LF but I do remember him in 1L of Tears and I was impressed. Maybe Asou-kun was an easier charcter for him to grasp rather than this DV guy. Maybe he just didn't understand the character to fully perform it at his best. It did looked like the writers messed up this character really badly from what you guys been talking about.
i guess I won't be downloading this drama anytime soon..

LOL.
A lot of the blame should be directed towards the the director and writer (maybe the entire production crew): they were too busy going for the cheap thrill and ratings rather than developing a thoughtful, intelligent story... What an incredible waste.

If you had facts, they would've been presented at the start... I think the lawyer-guy (phlargo) would agree if he were here and not partying in Mexico somewhere...

Honestly, I really don't expect that to happen: the (bogus) "SP" made sure of that.
Talk about a travesty.
Oh god.. the rumor of a movie wasn't just a cruel joke? That hurts.
So, really, should I just totally avoid the SP? It came out the day I flew out of Seattle and I haven't downloaded it yet. I could live through it, if it had anything to offer at all... _________________

ouch... I really feel I should check out something else he's done before I agree, though my initial reaction would mimic your analysis of his 'mad skilz' _________________

In all fairness, I haven't seen any of his other acting roles, so perhaps he is more capable. Then again, with the bar so low in Last Friends, I'd be shocked if he couldn't clear it in another role.

I guess 1L of Tears is supposed to be really good (if terribly sad) - My local friend (whom I brought nearly 20 DVDs full of dramas for him and his wife to watch) watched it and gave it pretty high praise.
He burned me some discs with it, so I'll take a look. _________________

Hm, that drama has been brought up over on D-Addicts as a supposed example of where Ryo's acting is good, so I will have to check that out sometime as well.

To be fair, I was only criticizing the rationale behind the "quality" of his acting in Last Friends specifically. Any one of us could have walked into that role with a paper cutout of his face and pulled it off.

You chose fun and sun in a foreign country over jimmy-jammering with us on the internet? Where's you priority?

Well, I figured since Last Friends was finally over, I needed to get away... after all, such a profound experience requires some quality time to ponder on and realize its impact as well as to adjust your life accordingly. _________________

I have no interest, honestly.... Keeping my JE boy exposure to a minimum is my rule of thumb.

What's a JE boy? I assume it just means something like idol, right?
I don't have any problem with guy-focused dramas - they're often all the emotional stuff that makes me all mushy inside, catering to women and all ;-) _________________

From what I little I have figured out, JE stands for Johnny's Entertainment, a talent agency that has been supposedly dishing out all these young male actors, and pop singing groups left and right. Obviously they cater to the young female demographic, but having the impression of being a manufactured artist there's always some doubt about their actual abilities. Seems like they get by on simply looks, or catchy pop songs, and not much more.
Again, I know little about JE really, so any more info would be nice.

well that's basically what almost everyone who's not a "fangirl" sees them to be.. a stereotypical view on it I guess.
Wiki helps:
- Johnny's & Associates (with list of debuted talents)
Jonnhy's (Johnny's & Associates / Jyanis / Johnny's Entertainment / JE) was established by Johnny's Kitagawa who recruited young males as talents. Johnny himself is man shrouded by controversies with sexual abuse allegations thus unspoken assumption will be that the boys have to bed that man to get "debuted" (JE talent will only graduate after a CD release under assigned groups -- there still are Juniors who are nearing 30s). Well... I hope he didn't touch my Arashi
JE is not without "real" talent. Ninomiya Kazunari was handpicked by Clint Eastwood to be Saigo in Letters From Iwo Jima. There are others who are more or as talented as him (Takuya Kimura, Junichi Okada, Nagase Tomoya, Domoto Koichi, Shingo Katori.. etc.) but were often not taken seriously because of this missconception. I've read an article by a Variety (the US publication entertainment mag) writer who seemed to be dumbfounded by Ninomiya's performance in Letters, even questioning where did he get the time to grasp a very real character. These JE guys not only act, sing and dance but they also were assigned to host various hit variety shows. Those who entered JE will be trained in all the field of entertainment. Even a person without real talent will eventually develop his own presence with JE grooming (eg. Matsujun. that guy can't sing but I find him bearable. also he managed to pulll of convincingly as an actor). The advantage of being in JE are the opportunities and loads of promotions / exposure with the help of Kitagawa influence.[/url]

That's true, but minus these mentioned few, most who have real talents within JE are often overlooked by their more shiny and hot (according to most people) peers and the really talented ones often need to work double to get recognition even within the agency. I would have rambled on and on about how Kanjani8 were often overlooked despite how musically talented they are compared to others around the same age, but this is not the thread to do so. _________________

it's all about the glossy.
how bout talking more about this at kanjani8 thread
but truthfully... all that hate you guys spew doesn't erase the fact that Ryo was really convincing in 1LoT. The guy impressed my very critical big brother with his performance and that itself impressed me. Actors do have their hits and misses. Too bad that you might be persuaded by this little fandom war which I bet will not change your perception on Ryo performance in the future, past or present. Even the fangirls have biasness against him for being in 2 groups (NEWS and Kanjani8). I can't imagine the load of work this guy have to carry but thankful enough, its a fun business to be in
