Hehee... Koichi = no interest, no friends, dark. What a way to describe his character Koichi in the novel is quite talkative coz he has to explain all the plans and his investigation result of their next target. And he grins when he teases Shizuna, or when their mission is accomplished. So although yes, seem like Koichi have no interest and no friends in the novel, but I don't think he's that dark. He is more serious and mature than his younger siblings though. And most importantly, alot smarter and quick-witted. His younger siblings cannot hide anything from him.

tofu, do you read the novel I translated? Shizuna's mother's background is revealed in Chapter 7. So if you patient enough to wait for it to be posted... ^^

But seem like there will be more to it... And I know there's something that the older brothers hide from Shizuna too. I noticed that when I was reading a chapter. But it can't be about the fact she's not blood-related, coz she exactly knows her name is Yazaki and not Ariake... but, I dunno maybe it happens later?? xD There are so many mystery here and there that made me "Huh?" while reading it^^

About the intention of making Shizuna character unrelated by blood. Well... I haven't read many chapters enough to know about this, but according to some readers:

Koichi has hidden feelings for Shizuna more than a sister, that he himself doesn't realize, and he accidentally showed it, when Shizuna started to fall in love with Togami Yukinari. It's kinda weird for me, coz this is totally incest They've grown up together since childhood! It'll be a different story if they're step siblings who first met when they are quite bigger. But well... I guess its possible for Koichi to feel that way, coz he know that Shii is not his birth sister from the start?

Still hoping its not true though, maybe its just the readers' opinion/analysis^^

First day's shooting went successfully according to nino's jweb

And the producer of this drama has said that he would not follow the ending of the novel and that unlike the novel which focused on the brother's plots, this drama would be more focused on the relationship between the characters.

Have to keep in mind the opinions are still speculations unless we ourselves have read through the whole book. Writers sometimes tend to leave the mystery of a character to their readers. Each readers will or may have a different perspective on the story. We just have to wait until one of us or any English speaking readers to spoil us by confirming if this is actually true.
