You can get away for less, but you have to maintain self restraint. I mean you don't need to stay at the fanciest hotel and eat at all the nicest restaurants.

Yatta, I am finally going back to Japan, for 8 days only but nevermind! w00t!

My budget is around 1300-1500 dollars (flights, hotel, public transport and food) for 8 days. Doesn't include any shopping, clubbing etc though. Well, I am not so much on a budget but my sister who just changed jobs is.

We were really lucky, we found a nice air fare, 500 dolllars, with British Airways. Dancing Shocked Downside: it's during Golden Week but we'll survive that.

To keep costs low, we'll be staying at the Villa Fontaine chain (or perhaps in a Tokyu Inn) - nothing fancy but still quite okay. We'll rather have lunch than dinner, lunch menus are usually a lot cheaper and if we go on a trip to Nagoya, Osaka or Kyoto, we'll be going with JTB's Sunrise travel packages.

Which brings me to the most important part: are there by any chance jdorama members in Tokyo between 29 April and 6 May? Mr Green

I would definitely like to go to Japan someday. Maybe in the next five years. I believe it's a beautiful country you just have to visit at least once in your life. I wonder, though, how much it would cost me to actually get there Wink

Basically I'll be touching down to Narita on 19 March and leaving on 31 March. If the weather stays warmer next month we'll get to see more sakura~ Yeah

Thinking of doing these 2 options. Going on a shoestring budget especially on hotels as I'd be outside most of the time and unconscious when I'm in the hotel. Mr Green

4-5N Tokyo / Hakone
6N Kyoto / Osaka / Himeji / Hiroshima / Miyajima with 7-Day Rail Pass
1N Tokyo

Hiroshima/Miyajima would be ambitious, may skip if time is too tight!

Alternatively, skip the rail pass and stick to Tokyo...

12N Tokyo / Hakone / Nikko / Yokohama / Kamakura Nut

Figuring out cost and everything else to decide. heh.. Naughty

i do think that is quite reasonable, and it really depends on what specific areas you want to see. For me, one trip to japan , i wanted to see Kyoto and the bamboo grove forest, and Hiroshima museum, area...so i went to go see that area too. Tokyo is quite large, and there are areas such as Nikko(2 hr by regular train), Sendai(near 2 hr away), Hakone, Kamakura, that you can do in a whole day trip, but still come back to Tokyo at night. With the amount of time you will be staying in Japan, i'd say it is doable to see other outside further areas such as Hiroshima, etc...but again, it depends on your budget and what you desire to see. I am going to plan out the areas i plan on seeing within some of those desired cities.

i think $2500, which includes airfare, shinkansen, hotel for a week, that sounds just about right, and if you include the bad exchange rate for the american dollar, yeah....maybe more..who knows.
I am going to try to do $4000 for just over 2 weeks, and all this while budgeting...and enjoying it at the same time.

Have decided on this Smile

4N Tokyo
1N Hakone
6N Kyoto
- Running around Kyoto, Osaka, Himeji, etc with 7-Day Rail Pass
1N Tokyo

Anyone with recommendations at Hakone? Wonder if there are private hot springs (outdoor/indoor) available coz my other half refuses to go to a public one.. Beaten Found some that allow reservations but they were quite far from the train station.

i stayed at Hakone overnight once back in '03. It was at the Fujiya Hotel, the oldest westernized hotel they have there, but very nice and great service. I stayed in Miyanoshita, a few stops from the outdoor Hakone museum.
so, 12 days in Japan eh? i think that is good, 4 in Tokyo, 1 in Hakone, and 6 in Kyoto, and 1 more in Tokyo, and i do think you can get most out of your rail pass and not have to worry about the exact fare change or using the Suica card, and having to deal with if you cannot get thru due to lack of fare amount or scanning. For the JR-rail pass, you can just flash it to the attendant and go, it is quite convenient.

Thanks for the information qilver Smile

For those having problems finding a hotel within your budget, you can try these out.

Rakuten Travel - http://travel.rakuten.co.jp/en/index.html
Has more focus on Japan/Asia, you'll find some hotels that are not listed in the major hotel/hostel networks such as hotelclub and hostelworld. You may find hotels that only the Japanese know about because almost every other foreigner goes to the main hotel networks!

Rates To Go - http://www.ratestogo.com
Offers very good deals if you're less than 1 month away from your trip.

Hope this helps!

I'm not sure you realize this, but this is the Sumo district. Look out for the hand impressions of different sumo wrestlers.
