That's hilarious... I'd love to see this story on our national news broadcast.
At the start of the news clip, the woman on the right is Yuko Ando. She is the Japanese equivalent of Barbara Walters. She only covers the big news items. When Obama was inagurated she came over to cover it. That's an indication of how big a story this was.
Short version of what's going on: In 1985 the Hanshin Tigers won the Japan Baseball Series. The fans in Osaka went nuts and during the celebrating the fans would yell out the name of a player and then somebody that they thought looked like that player would jump in the river. The Tigers had an American player named Randy Bass. When somebody yelled out his name, there were no Americans around but there was a KFC across the street. Close enough for them. They tore down the statue of the Colonel and threw it in the river. Ever since, the Tigers have been under "The Curse of the Colonel" and haven't won a championship since. Maybe that will change now.

A nice little business case study in Japan Times Online on what foreign companies doing business in Japan can do wrong. I always felt we didn't look enough at Africa and Asia during my MBA.

Fed Ex Plane Crashes at Narita Airport
TOKYO (AFP) – A FedEx cargo aircraft crash-landed in strong winds Monday morning at Japan's Narita International Airport east of Tokyo and burst into a ball of flames, police and news reports said.
"A cargo plane crash-landed at the airport, but we have not had any information of casualties," a local police official said after the accident about 6:50 am (2150 GMT Sunday).
The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 was FedEx Flight 80 from Guangzhou, China and was manned by a pilot and co-pilot, Kyodo News reported.
Public broadcaster NHK reported that one of the pilots was taken from the plane and sent to hospital, but his condition was not known.
Television footage showed the three-engine widebody airplane tip sideways shortly after touch-down amid strong winds and then, as one of its wings clipped the ground at high speed, burst into a ball of flames.
Fire engines and scores of fire-fighters in flame retardant silver suits rushed to the crash site near the runway and doused the fire with foam as the gutted aircraft lay upside down billowing black smoke.
The four-kilometre (2.5-mile) airstrip, one of the airport's two runways, was closed to air traffic, airport officials said.
The two pilots were believed to be US citizens, NHK said.
I hope this doesn't keep Q from getting out on time

One in three Japanese wives abused: survey
Posted Tue Mar 24, 2009 11:34pm AEDT
One in three married Japanese women have been physically or mentally abused by their husbands, according to a Government survey on domestic violence.
Of the victims over a third said they were injured or suffered mental harm, while more than 13 per cent said they feared for their lives, the poll by the Cabinet Office found.
The survey of 1,675 women found that 42 per cent of victims said they wanted to get divorced but would not, with many saying they hoped the violence would not be repeated and others worried about making ends alone.
More than 13 per cent of the women polled said they had experienced violence from their boyfriends when they were in their teens or 20s - with almost half of these victims injured or suffering mental harm.
Seventy per cent of the women questioned said they would support better education about domestic violence, and 57 per cent backed tougher punishment for offenders.

Costly koalas annoy Japan's homeless
By North Asia correspondent Mark Willacy for AM
They are arguably the most famous Australians in Japan, but the six koalas at Osaka's oldest zoo are costing the city $1.4 million a year just in gum leaves.
