Oko was basically a golddigger: She dumped Matahachi for Toji, because he was in line to take over the Yoshioka school, if Seijuro lost to Musashi. But the school had financial problems from Seijuro's excessive partying, and it's dyeing business collapsed after Densichiro's defeat at the hands of Musashi. After the stunning defeat at Ichijoji, Toji and Oko ran off and became the leaders of a pack of thieves...
Oh, she was involved with Matahachi too? No wonder they seemed to have that "chemistry" when exchanging dialouge and stuff. Heh, and then her daughter ended up with Matahachi. _________________

Yep. Musashi and Matahachi accidentally met up with Oko and Akemi after the Battle of Sekigahara... Oko and Akemi were looting the bodies of the dead soldiers and selling their items... Eech.
Oko threw herself at Musashi, but he wouldn't have anything to do with her, so she hooked up with Matahachi instead. Then the three of them abandoned Musashi, and headed for Kyoto...

So how did Akemi hook up with Matahachi if he was involved with Okoh? _________________

As I said, Oko was a golddigger: she dumped him for Toji. And Matahachi was there to console Akemi after Yoshioka Seijuro raped her. From that point on, Akemi was essentially in love with Matahachi.

I knew I should've watched it from the beginning. I had no idea that Yoshioka raped her. Don't touch my Rina! _________________

Oh, one other thing: In Yoshikawa Eiji's book, Oko is killed, but Matahachi isn't. And Matahachi and a pregnant Akemi go off together.
Yikes! I GOTTA read this book. Looks like the TV drama took SOME liberties (I mean, this sounds worse than Lecter on the plane at the end of cinematized Hannibal [that part, by the way, happens in the MIDDLE of the novel; and this cinematic liberty changes the story 180']).

Uh, yeahhhhhhh.... All TV/film adaptations take liberties one way of another...
Well, there are some closer to the source material than others, i.e. The Godfather and The Maltese Falcon are two great examples . . . from pop culture, at least.
Some of Kenneth Branagh's cinematic-based Shakespearean efforts go word-for-word from The Bard's works, you know. And THAT's much ado about something.
