Just finished NODAME CANTABILE... finally. Bonk Dunno why it took me so long to complete (5 months, new world record! haha). I think when I started on this last April I got turned off by the madcap, uber-mangafied treatment, with its profusion of color and motion (a bombardment of the senses! Shocked), so I bailed around episode 4. That was also around the time I got zapped into my Kimurastock '09, after which I never really looked back. Sweat

When I picked up where I had left off, strangely enough, the characters and screwball style didn't grate on me like they used to, and I finished the remaining seven episodes in just two sittings. (Funny how five straight months of sustained Jdorama imbibition can mess with your system, lol. Suddenly the crazy and the weird seem normal and... comforting? Haha. Dammit, you win, Jdoramas! Beaten) But this drama is more than just a silly, exuberant romp in the park; it also has a lot of heart. And as for that last episode--I couldn't have asked for a better way to end the series. Absolutely loved it! Applaud

I normally don't look too kindly on SPs and spinoff movies and stuff, because they only seem to act as gratuitous fan service that do nothing for believable character and plot development, but certain dramas, though they can stand on their own, hold so much promise for a sequel that you can't NOT care about the next chapter in the story... and the next, and the next. Thumbsup NODAME CANTABILE is one such drama. I want to know what happens to Nodame and Chiaki senpai and Eita and the hot violin chick and the gay timpani player and Takenaka Naoto's Mr. Potatohead nose! Roll out the SP(s)!!! (Er, is there a studio film in the can, beemer? Or is it just all for TV?) Moar! MOAR!!! Yeah

Hmm, that reaction seems to always be black and white when it comes to this drama... No gray area. Sweat

Maybe you just had to be in the right mood/frame of mind to watch this... Smile

True that.

This drama has a lot of layers... And all of it is substantial and gratifying in its own way. I don't think there's a drama out there that has been so satisfying on so many levels and can withstand multiple viewings without ever getting old... It's just that good.

You can thank the writers for that... And the entire production staff, for that matter: the entire drama has been a quality product from top to bottom: no cheap ratings grab or whoring new talent (read: the Gokusen series)... Just solid, top-notch stuff. Applaud

Two theatrical movies, girl, from Toho... And possibly destined for Cannes (rumor)... Movie #1: December 19... Movie #2: Spring 2010.

Some info from MIXI blog said that Masumi chan will appear on the movie!
Seems like the scene is not on the manga, so probably is an original creation.
This blogger is a probably an artist/painter. His/her work will be used in the scene when Nodame, Mine kun and Masumi chan go for portrait painting in the street of Paris.
(Which means Eita and Koide will be filming together with Juri chan in Europe?! Applaud )

The blogger accidentally said that his work will be used in the Movie II on March.
(Which means Movie II will be released on March?! w00t! )

Yep, there's just no middle ground with all that sensory overload. Mr Green I dunno, but I normally GO for this stuff. I mean, Baz Luhrmann is my favorite director alive, and he's the freakin' cinematic Godfathah of sensory overload. Head Scratch But I can understand why this style polarizes viewers, really I do.

Yeah, that's it. This was... let's see... the fourth Jdorama I ever watched (after HYD, PRIDE and CHANGE), so yeah, I guess I just wasn't psychologically primed for Nodame & Co. Victory! Peace!

rofl @ "whoring new talent"!!!

Yeah, the cast of NODAME CANTABILE are a spirited and gifted bunch, I'll give 'em that. Wink

Good to hear! Thanks for the heads-up. Good So they filmed both movies in one go, to be released in two installments, huh. (Like what they did with LOTR, I suppose?) Oh, wow, Cannes, huh. Fingers crossed I mean, if a movie like (sorry, Shingo, luv ya, Shingo)... SAIYUUKI managed to squeak by the screening committees in 2007, it should be less of a problem for NODAME CANTABILE, ne? Twisted Plus, European viewers can easily relate to all that Mozart and Schubert and Takenaka Naoto's bastardized German, lol. hehe

Some people see the silliness and slapstick and immediately get turned off... And they miss the core story in the middle third. Sad

Admittedly, I was taken aback by the drama's kinetics as well, since I'd never seen a drama with so much spirit and energy, but I was glad I hung around.

Squee?

No... But it was an immensely satisfying scene (and the crescendo from Rhapsody in Blue helped as well)... And notice that they didn't let the scene get too romantically thick and heavy: it gets immediately lightened up when Nodame's dad screams at them from the boat.... hehe

rofl @ "whoring new talent"!!!

'Tis true: Everything that followed the original Gokusen was just a showcase for new Johnny's, ne?

Total dreck. bleh

I'm sure the European locales couldn't hurt the drama if it does show up at Cannes... Big Grin

And a number of European Nodame fans have spotted the cast and crew in Paris, Prague, and Vienna, so Nodame fever is alive and well in Europe. Victory! Peace!
