Unless they're losing... Or better yet, getting routed. Beaten

If you're a fan of college football, you can't ignore USC--their cachet is just too enormous. They are involved in too many big games during the course of the season (and in the bowl season). As a result, they're on national TV a lot.

Speaking of USC, their victory over Ohio St. wasn't their usual dominating performance, but it was well earned. Both teams played very physical, very tough defense--in an era of baskeball-type scoring, this was a gratifying change of pace.

Michigan's upset victory over a Notre Dame team that clearly had superior personnel was another highly entertaining game.

The big upset of this second week of college football was Houston's shocking win over fifth ranked Oklahoma State. (I wonder if T. Boone Pickens is gonna take back some of the hundreds of millions of dollars he has donated to the Cowboys?)

UCLA's squeaking past host Tennessee was surprising, reminiscent of the 1960's under Tommy Prothro when they were known as the "gutty little Bruins" winning a number of close games even though their opponents were physically superior. It doesn't get any easier for the Volunteers next week--they face Florida.

Overall, a very satisfying weekend of college football.

Geezer--listening to great fight songs being played repeatedly is "music to my ears." Oh yeah, what does Niner Nation think of Michael Crabtree now?

In the past, I've been an Irish fan (Joe Montana!), but neither Charlie Weiss or Jimmy Clausen impress me, so I was happy to see them get upset by the Wolverines. Victory! Peace!

Yeah, that's pretty rude. Sweat

Hoping a player won't do well is one thing, but hoping that they get hurt is another. Sad

Ah yes. Sort of like the "music" of the dentist's drill.

The denizens of Ninerland are so busy trying to convince themselves that they can grow to appreciate Singletary-ball (one yard and a cloud of blood) that there's very little time to worry about Crabtree.

Truth to tell I don't know any Niner fans who haven't simply dismissed Crabtree as yet another lousy first round choice by the front office. The conversation, when it comes up, focuses on the rules about trading his rights come next March.

Myself? I'm furious. I wanted a NT in the draft. But I think I can understand the kid. Heck, if I had his kind of talent as a WR I wouldn't want to play in Singletary's offense either.

BMW

I watch USC for the same reason I force myself to listen to Limbaugh at least once a week. Or watch Fox News every now and then. You gotta know what the enemy is doing if you want to beat them.

I went to the Dodger game last night and they had the USC marching band play the national anthem. When they got done this guy in the row behind me said, "Pretty good band. I wonder if they get paid as much as the football players?"

There was a Thursday night College game, with #20 Miami looking very impressive in a 33-17 win over #14 Georgia Tech. It sets up a big game against Virginia Tech next weekend.

Tomorrow night, I'm just hoping Fresno State is at least competitive against #10 Boise State. Not many fond memories of last season's 61-10 loss.
