Top 20 gMori Girlsh
August - 23 - 2009
Do you know the latest buzzword "Mori Girl"? Itfs a term that got created in the mixi community, a huge social networking system and one of the most visited Japanese sites in the Internet. The general definition would be a "a girl who seems to be/live in a forest", describing a girl who would fit more into a forest rather than into a city.
In mixi you can find an endless list of more detailed definitions submitted by the users, but the most comprehensible feature would be the girlfs clothes. "She has to like fashion thatfs natural, but also a bit quirky" or "She wears a lot of dresses that have a loose or comfortable feeling to them", to name a few of the opinions. The difficulty is that the girl should like "natural clothes", but that doesnft mean she has to be an absolute lover of nature. Fashion is the key point here and I could tell you more than 100 more specific outfits and colors listed in mixi, but of course the character plays a big role, too. There has to be a gently and fluffily atmosphere around here, a cute appearance is much more important than being beautiful or pretty. A light skin also favors the image, as well as your favorite seasons, hobbies, how you react to certain situations (e.g. finding a cute book in a bookstore), if you cry during sad movies and so onc
Now to the actual ranking. Goo always follows the trend and so they asked their users about the top "mori girls" in the entertainment industry. An overwhelming amount of people (almost 50% of all voters) voted for actress Aoi Yuu, resulting in a clear and unchallenged 1st place. This year the magazine "spoon." released a special issue called "Mori Girl AtoZ" in order to tell people about this new term and the girl on the cover was no other than Aoi Yuu. That special issue was so popular that they even decided to release a second edition in September, there is no better proof for the recent popularity of "mori girls." Back to Aoi Yuu, there is probably nobody who can deny that certain atmosphere around her and the certain style of clothes she likes to wear during work and in private. Everything about her simply feels so comfortable and at ease.
Miyazaki Aoi got the 2nd place in this ranking. Many people give her that image because of her cute and soft image in her Tokyo Metro or Aflac commercials. She had the same image in a lot of other movies and doramas, but there is one significant role that broke the image. As you know, she had the starring role in NHKfs "Atsuhime" and delivered an impressive performance, not as some cute princess, but as a really dignified Atsuhime. Anyway, letfs check out the whole top 20.

Here's two of the top three.
Nice photo. Given the similarities of many of the actresses, in terms of demeanor/persona, on that list I can say it's consistent in terms of selecting actresses with that certain "down to earth" quality as you put it.

As Geezer put it, there are "stars" and then there's "actors."

Seiko Matsuda to appear in "Bones"
Singer and actress Seiko Matsuda (47) is the next Japanese celebrity to appear in an American television drama. It has been learned that she will play a Japanese journalist in an upcoming episode of the crime drama "Bones."
Currently in its fifth season, "Bones" stars Emily Deschanel as a forensic anthropologist and David Boreanaz as an FBI special agent. The show also become a hit in Japan, and has been shown on broadcast television there since 2008.
Matsuda, who will be the first Japanese person on the show, was offered the role by the show's producers. She was reportedly chosen for her English ability (all of her lines are in English), her acting skills, and her name recognition. During the taping, the staff were impressed by her professional spirit. Although the role is limited to a single episode, Matsuda remarked that she would like to play the part again.

from Kawaii Joyuu:
Actresses That Produce Must-Watch Doramas
Japanese internet search engine and web portal "goo" released the results of another recent survey related to actresses. It was focused on all actresses that are younger than 30 only, but similar to the actor rankings they are probably going to put up another ranking for the older actresses very soon as well.
What actress can you recommend? The entertainment world brings out one new female celebrity after another. Most of them usually start out with roles in doramas and soon they become some of the most popular actresses in the country. Itfs can be hard to keep track, so letfs separate the wheat from the chaff. "Younger than 30 year-old female celebrities that make you watch a dorama no matter what." The literal translations for those ranking titles can sometimes be really longc
On first place we have a young actresses who had her big breakthrough with the dorama "Crying out Love, in the Center of the World" and since then has steadily seen an increase in her popularity. Yes, Ayase Haruka topped yet another new ranking. So far she played many different roles and often revealed her natural and particular character on variety shows. Her costars like to describe her as a "natural airhead" which isnft necessarily a bad trait in the eyes of many. As clumsy she is in real life, as professional she can be during filming.
Shibasaki Kou ranked int on second place. She often gets praised for her diversity that eventually resulted in a 2nd career as a singer. On February 6 her new movie "Rincofs Restaurant" will open to the public and many people are looking forward to what kind of acting she is going to show them this time. It never gets boring watching her, thatfs why she makes every dorama a must-watch.
Many will be glad to see that Nagasawa Masami is still up there in the top 3 as well, despite her bad choice of roles recently and no luck at the box office rankings either. Interest in her seems to be as high as ever, all she needs to do is to deliver. Ifm looking forward to her projects in 2010.
