Okay, it doesn't start for another two weeks, but I picked up a copy of the publication NHK puts out every year for their taiga, so might as well start a thread:

Synopsis
The 49th NHK Taiga drama is Ryoma den, set in the Bakumatsu period. The story focuses on the life of Sakamoto Ryoma, who lived from 1835 to 1867. He was an important leader in the movement to overthrow the Tokugawa Bakufu, eventually bringing about the Meiji Restoration. He was also one of the founders of modern day Japanese navy through incorporation of western technology, which proved to be a force to be reckoned with during the revolution.

Funny thing is, other than Hirosue, Kagawa Teruyuki, and Yoko Maki, this cast doesn't look that impressive. Which could be a good thing, the cast of Tenchijin is great but it turned out to be pretty disappointing.

Kagawa Teruyuki and Hirosue is definitely solid. I luv thewhole storyline for this so it really, better be good!!!

The problem (I think) with the Taigas are that they're too long and drawn out... They seem to go flat in the middle third.

Most taigas are like that. I like the flow of Toshiie to Matsu though. And as boring as the opening for Shinsengumi is, it really picks up more interestingly in the middle.

"Ryomaden" starts at 23.2%

NHK's new taiga drama "Ryomaden," starring Masaharu Fukuyama (40), premiered on Sunday night. Viewership data shows that the first episode averaged a 23.2% rating, indicating a fairly good start for the show.

While "Ryomaden" fell short of last year's "Tenchijin" (which achieved 24.7% with its first episode), the show still scored the second best opener of the past five years.

It got a pretty hefty plug during the Kohaku. They showed about 30 seconds of preview druing the main part of the program (not as a CM). Then followed it with a song by what I suppose is one of the leading guys in the taiga. I think he was interviewed also but could not understand.
