Shibasaki, Ninomiya to co-star in "Ooku" adaptation
Kou Shibasaki (28) and Arashi member Kazunari Ninomiya (26) have been chosen to star in Fuminori Kaneko's "Ooku," a live-action film adaptation of the manga by Fumi Yoshinaga.
Yoshinaga's "Ooku" is a historical fiction set during the Edo period. A mysterious disease strikes Japan's male population, reducing their numbers to a fraction of the female population. As a result, the traditional gender roles are overturned, with women becoming the dominant members of society and men becoming valued for their ability to produce offspring.
In the story, the shoguns of the time are actually women, and the "ooku" (the "inner chambers" of the shogun's castle) consists of thousands of men rather than women. Shibasaki plays the role of the shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune, while Ninomiya plays a young man named Mizuno who enters the ooku.
The movie, said to have a budget of 1 billion yen, covers only the first of the 5 manga volumes released so far. However, producers are considering turning "Ooku" into a series of films.
"Ooku" opens in theaters on October 1, 2010.
Thanks for the info.
I've actually read the first volume of this manga...this should be interesting...Shibasaki is perfectly cast because she often plays those ice princess roles to perfection.

Will be watching Cha no aji - the taste of tea tonight.
It looks very promising
It actually won a price here in Brussels in 2005 at the excellent Fantastic Film Festival.
It's really hard to find many better films than that, you're really gonna enjoy it, it's 140 minutes though, make some extra popcorn! _________________

Yes, very good film, had forgotten all about it as of late.
If you're staying home for New Years Eve, a fantastic film to watch is this, The Wow-Choten Hotel, also known as Uchoten Hotel, seen it maybe 10 times, gets better and better!
Koji Yakusho, Takako Matsu , Koichi Sato , Shingo Katori, Ryoko Shinohara, Keiko Toda , Katsuhisa Namase, Kumiko Aso, Jo Odagiri.
2005 film from Koki Mitani ("Warai no Daigaku") tells the story of a wacky cast of characters in one hotel. A long-separated husband (Koji Yakusho) and wife (Mieko Harada) reunite with a clash on New Years Eve. Meanwhile, the hotel bellboy (Shingo Katori) has given up on his dream of becoming a singer and decided to return home when he meets an old friedn and current flight attendant (Kumiko Asou). Meanwhile, the former mistress (Takako Matsu) of a Japanese Diet member (Koichi Sato) holes up as a maid in the hotel to avoid the eyes of the public after the scandal breaks . . . meanwhile the Diet Member who is trying to evade the pending news that he's involved with the mob also sneaks into the hotel where he meets a call girl (Ryoko Shinohara). Featuring an all-star cast, a proven director, and some of the most hilarious situation comedy you've seen in years, "The Uchoten Hotel" is not to be missed.

Thanks, lots of good movies, I really like older ones. Some links are right below the movie's description, some though bring you to a page 2, on an example like this where clicking on the link does nothing, does that mean you can't download it?
