I guess so. We bought an Onkyo 5:1 home theater system a few years ago, this is part of that.
Cool.
My current AV receiver is an ancient Dolby Pro-Logic 4.1(?) thingy.
Hmm, looks like 5.1 models are a little harder to come by: 7.1/7.2 seems to be the new thing... Even though there's no way I could accommodate two more speakers...

Anyone got any recommendations on a AV receiver?
I'm looking at models from Yamaha, Denon, and Onkyo at the moment.
I got an Onkyo TX-SR607 summer of last year as my 6-7 year old receiver died. I got it right as I was thinking about getting a PS3 Slim for games and Blu-rays and was thinking that I needed some HDMI inputs. Bam, God kills the old receiver.
I have had no issues with it; the sound is great. It has 5 HDMI inputs in the back and one in the front. Decodes all sound formats including the HD ones. It's a 7.2 receiver, and I have it hooked up as a 6.1 system. Does up to Pro-Logic IIz, but I don't have the extra speakers for the "z" configuration. _________________

AD, does your unit run on the warm side? Mine has a little sticker on the top telling me it's normal to be able to cook eggs on it.
Yeah, it does. I don't remember a sticker, and it's at the bottom of the stack of components, but we keep the doors open when it's in use because it does run hot. (we have a wooden TV unit, all the components are behind doors)

My brother recently picked up the near equivalent to the SR607, the HT-RC160... Really nice unit with the Audyssey calibration system and analog to digital upscaling feature... He waited in line at Fry's on 12/26 to buy the thing for $299... It lists at $550.

You don't HAVE to plug in speakers for all the outputs.

With 1 million to 1 Mega Dynamic Contrast Ratio™, Smart Dimming™, and 120 Hz with Smooth Motion technology, the XVTPRO580CD delivers brilliant details and rich colors to bring the cinematic experience into the home.
Its striking wide appearance is further enhanced by its brushed aluminum chassis. The Cinema Wide Display also includes VIA, built-in wireless (802.11n dual-band) or wired networking, and a Bluetooth universal remote control with sliding QWERTY keyboard. It is expected to ship later this year.

Needless to say, I'm rather skeptical about 3D: they've been screwing with this longer than the Missile Defense System... And neither one works.
Yeah I think it has niche appeal at best...moreover, I dunno if everybody wants to look like a tard wearing some gimpy looking glasses just so that piece of sizzling bacon on screen jumps out at you so you can pretend to bite it.
