I guess so. We bought an Onkyo 5:1 home theater system a few years ago, this is part of that.

Cool.

My current AV receiver is an ancient Dolby Pro-Logic 4.1(?) thingy.

Hmm, looks like 5.1 models are a little harder to come by: 7.1/7.2 seems to be the new thing... Even though there's no way I could accommodate two more speakers... Sweat

Anyone got any recommendations on a AV receiver?

I'm looking at models from Yamaha, Denon, and Onkyo at the moment.

I got an Onkyo TX-SR607 summer of last year as my 6-7 year old receiver died. I got it right as I was thinking about getting a PS3 Slim for games and Blu-rays and was thinking that I needed some HDMI inputs. Bam, God kills the old receiver.

I have had no issues with it; the sound is great. It has 5 HDMI inputs in the back and one in the front. Decodes all sound formats including the HD ones. It's a 7.2 receiver, and I have it hooked up as a 6.1 system. Does up to Pro-Logic IIz, but I don't have the extra speakers for the "z" configuration.

Mine doesn't do HDMI though, so that would rule it out for you.. but I can vouch for the quality of the unit.

AD, does your unit run on the warm side? Mine has a little sticker on the top telling me it's normal to be able to cook eggs on it.

Yeah, it does. I don't remember a sticker, and it's at the bottom of the stack of components, but we keep the doors open when it's in use because it does run hot. (we have a wooden TV unit, all the components are behind doors)

My brother recently picked up the near equivalent to the SR607, the HT-RC160... Really nice unit with the Audyssey calibration system and analog to digital upscaling feature... He waited in line at Fry's on 12/26 to buy the thing for $299... It lists at $550. Victory! Peace!

That one's probably my front runner.

You don't HAVE to plug in speakers for all the outputs. Wink

Well, yeah. Bleah

But why pay for two extra amplifier channels if I don't use 'em? Sweat

From CES 2010:

Vizio 58" Cinema Wide Display

Taking a major step forward in enabling viewers to experience a fully immersive widescreen film experience without a separate projector and screen, VIZIO's first Cinema Wide Display, the XVTPRO580CD offers the ultimate experience for the movie enthusiast. This 58" Razor LED display has a 21x9 aspect ratio, with an incredible resolution of 2560 x 1080p, allowing consumers to view 2.35:1 "Scope" aspect ratio films using the entire display area, with no loss of resolution and no black bars. With 1 million to 1 Mega Dynamic Contrast Ratio™, Smart Dimming™, and 120 Hz with Smooth Motion technology, the XVTPRO580CD delivers brilliant details and rich colors to bring the cinematic experience into the home.

Its striking wide appearance is further enhanced by its brushed aluminum chassis. The Cinema Wide Display also includes VIA, built-in wireless (802.11n dual-band) or wired networking, and a Bluetooth universal remote control with sliding QWERTY keyboard. It is expected to ship later this year.

Hehe. Guess it makes sense.

Well seems the big talk at CES re: TVs is 3D.

Before you know it we'll be plugging in cables to the back of our necks a la Ghost in the Shell.

Needless to say, I'm rather skeptical about 3D: they've been screwing with this longer than the Missile Defense System... And neither one works. Beaten

Yeah I think it has niche appeal at best...moreover, I dunno if everybody wants to look like a tard wearing some gimpy looking glasses just so that piece of sizzling bacon on screen jumps out at you so you can pretend to bite it.
