Sorry if this isn't the correct thread to continue discussing this topic, but I think what happens with truly great artists who suffer from melancholy or depression is that their art brings them their greatest joy. In the process of them sharing their artistic talents with us, no matter how painful to them, it gives us all some of our greatest moments of joy and beauty. So even through their suffering they are able to give others so much! They couldn't possibly work in any old mundane job otherwise where would their creative genius be released. Their real fulfillment comes from their art. Who knows what causes a person to commit suicide. Perhaps they just want the emotional pain to stop and unfortunately they don't see another way out. Yet there are so many ways out if only they could look beyond the moment of sadness and sorrow and have faith in a better or brighter tomorrow. |
Just to go along with this, it also works the other way, and most likely does. For depressed artists, creating art because very painful because it's a mirror of who they are in the moment. Frida Kahlo is an excellent example. She injected in her work all the misery and pain she suffered in life. For the audience we're appreciative because the results are so touching, or aesthetically pleasing, or meaningful in different facets. And the artists continue to produce because, as Enna said, it's a venue to expressing their inner selves. No matter how painful. _________________

True artists or those gifted with special talents, it seems to me, must produce. Whether their venue is music, writing or paint etc. Also as athletes or working with animals or even as business entrepenurs.
Whether happy or painful is not the question nor the answer. It is just the depiction and the rest is compulsion _________________

@ Wynter - So sad that Frida Kahlo suffered such great physical pain!
@Eve- Sorry I got a little confused with your response. Do you mean that you think that all creative people are compulsive in their behavior? Aren't there many artists who are too depressed to produce? We were mainly talking about tourtured artists and why they don't work in mundane jobs.

I dont mean all of anyone.
Just that many gifted people as well as "artists" who are truly driven to produce whatever is their medium are often compulsive about it and therefore would not, could not work at other mundane jobs.
I was not commenting about the ones who are too depressed to produce. _________________

I think we were both saying the same thing.

Just asking, not trying to be a pill. |

Nah don't worry about it. I think this conversation has probably wound down anyway.

Okay...
My first guess would be the "Got Something You want to Say?" thread... It's sort of a catchall thread, I think.

Isn't it?! I'm not a huge fan of her technique because she wasn't a strong painter, but the subject matter, after learning about her life, really makes her work powerful, ya know?
Edit: Oops, just read other posts. Sorry to continue the discussion. _________________

He was a major figure in dorama since the early 1970's. For some 30 seasons he was the lead character in the Hissatsu (Sure Death) series, an immensely popular jidai-geki dorama about a group of assassins who are hired to eliminate those who prey on the weak and defenseless. In addition, for some 18 seasons he was the lead detective in Hagure Keiji Junjoha, another popular series that, from what I understand, ranks among the best cop shows ever broadcast in Japan.
A couple of years ago he played the tempermental Shakespearean actor who exasperates Matsu Takako's character to no end in Yakusha Damashii.
In addition to his work on TV, he appeared in many movies, acted on stage, and cut a number of albums.
He had a long successful career and was a very good actor. |
I think he played the elder Yagyu, Sekishusai, in the NHK Taiga Musashi...
Condolences to his friends and family.

Sad news, I really enjoyed watching Yakusha Damashii. Recently I was thinking about re-watching it.

Actor Corey Haim, 38, was pronounced dead at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, Calif., Thursday morning after an apparent overdose, police said.
Police learned of the death, which occurred between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. Thursday, when staff at the hospital called authorities, said Sgt. Frank Albarren of the Los Angeles Police Department's North Hollywood Station.
"It was an apparent overdose," Albarren said. "Unknown what type of medication."
Haim found fame in the 1987 when he co-starred in numerous films with actor Corey Feldman, including "The Lost Boys."
