I didn't like Vol 1 because I didn't like the over-cheesiness, even though I knew that was exactly the point of the movie. But at least the action itself was moderately interesting.
I only went to watch Vol 2 because it was supposedly better than Vol 1. However Vol 2 was pure rubbish IMO. I want my 3 hrs back.
I just got mine from Singapore on Monday... damn freaking cool... just re-watched the whole movie today and have watched the battle scene for over 20 times now hahaa... freaking cool

****** Possible Spoiler if you really care ******
When I first saw previews for this movie I had two thoughts. First Bill Murray! Second JAPAN!
In this movie Bill Murray displays his style of "wistful" comedy. I am very impressed. He protrayed the aging actor that is doubtful and jaded perfectly. I felt SO sorry for him duringthe scenes with the wife over the phone and those damn rug samples!
Scarlett Johansson played the youthful woman who is questioning her life with her husband. Her lack of interest in his lifestyle and the direction he goes.
The the two characters meet offically. It cries "An Affair to rememeber"! It's that one moment when you connect with someone else in ways you couldn't with anyone else. They are both Americans lost in the tides of unfamilar circumstances, and having to deal with how disconnected they feel with the rest of the world ( Family mostly it seems )
But the ending is where you come to the reality of things. She's Married, so's he. Is what they feel more than just two strangers talking on the bus ride home?
A touching movie with a BEAUtiful setting. The scenes from Kyoto were awesome.
I died Laughing during the TV Talk show! Being a huge anime buff and understanding some of Japanese humor I couldn't help but find the humor in it. However I also saw what Bill character was experiencing ( Unease, uncertainty, basically feeling the butt of the joke since he didn't understand the humor of it all. But it worked out for him anyways. )
During the whiskey commercial scene I could understand the director was saying more than the interpreter was telling, but I really wished I knew what he really did say.
Gerwalker could you tell me? By the way, When you worked with an interpreter what happened? Is it funny? I've got to hear. Back on topic.
The karaoke part KILLed me because it only further emphisied the expectation that the only people that go to karaoke clubs can't sing and get courage from the bottle. I know here in the US it's only a small percent that can't sing when going to karaoke and usually it's because they can't carry a harmony or they don't know the song as well as they thought.
At least they had a nice private karaoke booth to belt out those tunes to their hearts content. But man it must get REALLY hot in there ( drinking in close quarters with many people and windows don't open. )
After watching that movie I have begun to seriously chase my dream of visiting Japan. I also ran out and rented "Virgin Suicides" which is another movie directed by Sophia Copella.
I hope more people enjoy this movie as much as I have.
Yeah, you know that was Matthew from "Matthew's Best Hit Generation" tv show. I found a clip of Bill's appearance on that show and he shoves a live unagi down Matthew's pants. It was a classic Bill Murray moment.
Not sure Matthew or the unagi really enjoyed it though.
OH OH!! This was such a GREAT movie, Bill Murray churned out an excellent performance in this movie, and Sophia Johannsen probably kick started hers too. I love how it takes away some of the mystique of Japan by showing life there, while at the same adding to it by showing you all the strange things that people do in their daily lives. And of course you can't go wrong with "LIP my stocking!!"

Yup I saw that on the DVD in the special features. That was definately classic Bill. I loved watching The Murray's play golf on Comedy central.
What does Matthew's show revolve around? Pop culture entertainment, or variety show?
Oh woow!! I totally forgot this movie was out! Tom Cruise did come, and stab a lot of people, but none of that bore any harm to him, for Scientology saw him through what with it's "awesomeness" and whatnot.
I remember being totally skeptical of this being a good movie at all, the whole concept of an american Caucasian guy being the last Samurai seemed soo hackneyed, not to mention that this particular guy was also from Risky Business... But boy was I surprised!

Tom Cruise wasn't the last samurai ... Watanabe Ken was the last samurai
I do agree, I think it's natural to be skeptical that Hollywood would do well with this subject matter But I liked it!
It's an excellent movie, despite the Hollywood-ish ending.
Yes, let's all remember the good parts of the movie and pretend we never even saw the ending...
"I'll tell you how he lived.. "
And yeah, I get that Ken was the last Samurai, BUT at the time that this was playing at the theatre, I had no way of knowing this. But the point was that I did like the movie.
16 bucks? That IS good, almost as good as me getting Kill Bill vol. 1 for 15, I'll have to look into this!

Ooh!
I GOT MY COPY
I've opened it, removed the sticky stickies and all . . . haven't watched it yet, but, man, I wonder what the "deleted scenes" look like.
Glad the DVD captures that History channel documentary. The vignettes "Silk and Armor: Costume Design with Ngila Dickson," "Imperial Army Basic Training," "From Soldier to Samurai: The Weapons," and footage of the Japan premieres all look promising.
Tangent: Utada Hikaru needs a better agent; she shoulda' done the obligatory pop-song-for-epic-film for The Last Samurai if she wants some noteriety.
