hmm... i thought you could remove it... my friend plays movies he buys in asia/aus... though, those might be region free.

I would think Sony, Panny, Pioneer, etc. doesn't sell stuff that is remote hackable: it might require a firmware/hardware modification.

Well, here's what i've been able to figure out.. BD Region A is Aus, Asia and North America... so you're good for those. EU uses a different coding for NTSC on the games, not sure about the movies. PAL there is a patch, but you have to move it to your hard drive, iirc.

if you want to play movies from japan, it wouldn't matter what you bought. DVDs you can play on the upconverting philips dvd player anyways.

Apparently the Oppo BD player has a NTSC/PAL remote hack.

The Philips DVD players are region free remote hackable (I have one) and they all automatically convert to PAL/NTSC.

yeah, that's why i said you can use that to play your dvds.

i think thats going to be difficult in the end because many of the players want to be wired, if they're calling back home for firmware updates and such, the hacks would be easily reversed when the firmware updates or when you're picking up streaming data from let's say Sony to a Sony BD player.

As I said earlier, the likelihood of a Sony or other major brand being hackable in the first place is close to nil.

And the streaming nowadays can be accomplished by a third-party product (WD, Seagate, and Patriot come to mind) and a number of HDTVs.
