I was in L. A. late in the afternoon yesterday and because of the traffic we decided to stop in Little Tokyo for dinner. I normally don't eat ramen this often but we ended up at Daikokuya. We had the tonkotsu ramen and it was quite good. The kurobuta chashu, like you mentioned, melted in our mouths and the broth was tasty, too. It's a very small place but people kept coming in to eat. Another good recommendation! Thanks! |
You are on a ramen rampage. I like it!
Yeah their chashu is still the best in my opinion. Their gyoza is good too. It's definitely a solid bowl of ramen, and as I mentioned, I believe it's the place that in large measure began the parade of ramen restaurants here in L.A, thanks in no small part to LA WEEKLY's Johnathan Gold rave review years ago.
Yeah like bmwracer said, that place is constantly busy. I've driven down 1st Street around lunch time and the people waiting for a seat always spill out on to the sidewalk.

I do but I'm chillin' on the carbs for minute. Moreover, I was trying to be quick about it so I wasn't in the mood to wait for my Zojirushi to fire up the gohan.

Oh that's perfect. Before the veritable storm of customers....
Well you hit a ramen trifecta huh? Nantsuttei, Mottainai, and Daikokuya.
3 good reasonably priced meals...beats eating crap food at many of the chain restaurants or fast food joints.
So which one did you like the best?

I would say it's a toss up between Mottainai and Daikokuya. Mottainai might have a slight edge on their broth but Daikokuya served more noodles. The gyoza at Mottainai was way better though. I'd go back again to either place.

You need to add Ramen California into the mix.

Yeah I agree with that sentiment regarding the gyoza. I think Mottainai's Sapporo Miso Ramen is number 1 for me at the moment.

That was a perfect follow up.
Boar's Head! Reminds me of all the great sandwiches I used to eat which I picked up from the local bodega (aka deli) in the Village when I lived in New York.
Good times.

Our supermarket actually makes superior Boar's Head subs. Publix has an awesome bakery too so the Ja-pan is terrific too. We're lucky that way. _________________

Nice. I have to travel a bit to get a good sandwich. Relegated to Subway around here. Negative on that.

Too bad.
The only Subway we do it the meatballs with lots of fresh green peppers and red onion. And that only on road trips. Not when we have a choice. _________________

Don't get me wrong there are awesome sandwich shops here, just not in my immediate neck of the woods. Can't have it all.

No complaints from here.
I just ate a perfectly cooked rare NY strip sirloin with mashed potatoes/carrots and steamed spinach from the red pot!
Husband is trying to heal me.
I only was in charge of the steaks. I have a feel for the timing. |
Nice. Get better, kid.
