Also feel good that my guesses seemed correct about why he used kids who hadn't played before.
Only about 1/3 through so who knows what might be coming that's new. My translator did say this was the easy part so it could really be a long time before I get more! And the plan is also to get stuff from the First and Last Concert translated. Could be some insights there. Since a lot of that is performing, maybe that won't be as time consuming - if we ever get that far!

Ah, figured it out - at least mostly. Only times they used those music stand types were when playing outside - this one is in front of the store when they first played well. I could match up the positions of most of the people with the actual movie, but not quite perfect in one case. However, I don't know why this looks like night while the movie is during the day. I know you can do funny things with photography though. Of course, it could be a night rehearsal, but then why be "in costume"?

Maybe, but I don't know if they do dress rehearsals for movies, though they do for plays. Since a movie typically involves multiple takes of a scene - which they may cut part of together later - I don't know if a dress rehearsal makes a difference.
I've done about 4.5 minutes of the srt file. Pain getting everything timed right!

No program. Just taking an srt file I had for SG and, as I go through the text of the translation, cutting and pasting to replace what was already there and adjusting the time instructions.
It seems actually a little easier to do that than to retype everything from scratch where I'd be more likely to make typos.
I can only fit so much on the screen at any one time or it covers everything up so I have to divide things up and, to do that right, try to time things so they appear when it sounds like the person is starting a new sentence.
It gets really weird when the translation I have give a short statement, but the person talking goes on and on! Since I don't speak Japanese, I have to guess if I have it right. But the big thing is getting the words to appear at the right time. At least pretty close. Eventually, if I get this done, I'd probably go back and try to get it exact (words appear at the precise instant a statement begins), but that can wait. For now it is just pretty close.

i remember playin alto sax back in highschool band(the only class i cared about).. i wasn't practising hours every day.. but i was still struggling to get proper tone months into it. i blame the reed.. felt like it kept drying out on me.

Funny, because I'll often see kids in my band make a mistake in the note they play and they look at the reed or something as if there is something wrong with that!
I have one real translator - a Japanese woman who is the parent of one of my students. But before that I had the student translate a few things between classes.
No idea when I'll get more of this video done - or the First and Last Concert video. I have moved about 16 minutes of it to an srt file so far so over half way done this portion.

gotta point the finger somewhere : P my prob was getting an 'airy' sound.. hard to be motivated to practise when you sound like crap. fingering for the notes wasn't so bad.
nastiest thing about band class is how you have to empty out all the spit that collects in the brass/wind instruments.. we were told to just let it spill out onto the carpeted floor they should have spittoons in band class

I suspect they are all taking a break - brass band in a different place. I can't make out enough detail, but I do note that Juri is carrying something in a bag that could be utensils (chopsticks!?) rolled up in napkins.
Something else I found a little interesting in the "making of" video. The girls are often shown setting up chairs, etc. I may be wrong, but somehow I have the feeling that in Hollywood the actors would not be doing any of the physical work!

i spy a bright orange t-shirt at the lower right corner.. and the girls are carrying the sabotaged lunches. looks like they're setting up to shoot the lunch delivery at the baseball game.
The girls are often shown setting up chairs, etc. I may be wrong, but somehow I have the feeling that in Hollywood the actors would not be doing any of the physical work!

Ah, yep, it's lunches. Had to look through the movie part that showed them until I finally saw an angle that made the side view look like things rolled up rather than bento boxes - sorta depends on how the light hits them. Could be a run through to determine where each would go while the other kids were on break. Or I guess they could be using the same type bento box for their own lunch.
