Then maybe, you should try watching Chuushingura 1/47...yanie_chan may find it boring, but Takuya's acting saved the show.
I've seen the movie versions of Chushingura: Mizoguchi Kenji's 47 Ronin (1947?) and Inagaki Hiroshi's Chushingura (1962?)... Those adaptations were pretty good.

I am really enjoying this show. Shinsengumi means "the Fresh Recruits". I agree about Shingo being a little stiff as Kondo Isami. I think that is probably his ideal as the way a samurai/Ronin should be. The whole cast seems very talented.

hi folks. i guess i'm getting into this thread a bit late. i've been watching the series, and it's grown on me. i don't take it seriously (i like history, and they hardly mention history in the show), but it's a fun series. i preferred the musashi series because there was more of a focus on history. here, history seems more like an excuse to have certain guys on the show (no offense intended!).
i have to agree with the comments on the casting. i won't repeat what everyone has said. but it's a fun ensemble cast.
the theme song sucks. as for the intro, what are they all running around for? i like the kirigami, though.
i went to a few places on my vacation to japan just a few weeks ago where they talked about shinsengumi. i'll have to look at all the souvenir books & stuff i got to figure out where they were. it was such a whirlwind tour, i'm still recovering! the ending of the history for shinsengumi is tragic. maybe i'll read the book on ryoma sakamoto to figure out this period of japanese history. i'm reading something else right now anyway, figure another week before i get back to reading anything japanese.

I'm assuming that, unless you're in Hawaii, you're receiving Shinsengumi! from TV Japan. I'm not sure if TV Japan includes the 90-second segment "Shinsengumi Travels" at the end. In case they don't (or they don't translate it to English), the English-subbed segments are available for BitTorrent downloading on d-addicts.

KIKU-TV showed these li'l historical shorts (called "Musashi Travels") at the end of each Musashi episodes too.
I like the Shinsengumi ones better though; they slowly go into each character as they talk about certain landmarks (the Musashi takes just kept talkin' 'bout "this is here," "that is there," with no pinpointing link to the characters) and, to be fair, I dunno if it's because places associated with the real Shinsengumi are still up today -- must be because (and this is also what the Musashi vignettes did not provide) the "Shinsengumi Travels" tell you how to get to the places, via train and bus and on foot, that are discussed.
Also, got cartoon Shinsengumi warrior and li'l dog at the end as well .
'Nother thing . . . as much as I liked Musashi, I think what Shinsengumi's showing is that when you have a seasoned, tried-and-true TV and cinematic creator (Koki Mitani, in this case) attached to a project, you're gonna' get some fantastic results.
And this is why Shinsengumi is so great.
Each show gets better and better, and you can't forget the great past episodes. And this is only one reason why the show's so attractive.

You may have actually visited several of the sites mentioned in these segments during your vacation.

i'm in LA and they don't show that stuff on the end. the show is being broadcast through UTB, whatever that is. in fact, it's an hour long show and about half of the time is taken up by commercials! i'm not kidding - it's about that much time - my bro taped it for me while i was in japan and we looked at the time for the commercials vs. the time taken by the show. i suspect a lot of it is being chopped up before broadcast.

I agree with you, I don't take it seriosly too. I took Musashi more seriously, actually. But "Shinsengumi" is very entretaining and funny. _________________

I have no idea what u meant, on Mitani Koki....but I sooooo agree with u,... since it shld be a compliment, rite?*LOL* Yup, yup! I have become a fan of Mitani Koki's works! Detective Furuhata, Koji Yakusho's AiKotoba, Toshiaki Karasawa's Minna no Ie, Shingo's HR, 2eps of NHK's Kawa Itsuka Umi e.
I'm sooo glad he's the one to handle Shinsengumi^^ And it seems his fave actors are Koji Yakusho & Shingo Katori desu nee....x) His next work will be another comedy movie entitled "Warai no Daigaku" starring Koji Yakusho & Goro Inagaki....looking forward to that^^
Shinsengumi is just getting better that now, they are in Kyoto! The inner conflicts Serizawa Kamo has go thru....the actor did a great job!! I mean, nonchalantly, he tells Isami & Hijikata, that he only cares so little abt the country.... But in another scene, we can see that mean & viscious samurai, Serizawa is so angry & upset of himself, till his eyes gets teary when he's alone, superb acting!
Really like Saitou Hajime's plot too!! Just interesting....and how he fights those guys without sword, coz he doesnt want to harm people anymore...is COOL!!!
And I DO think Shingo's acting is progressing bit by bit. He's quite more natural now, in acting Isami Kondou. But anyway, I dunno what ppl really expected.... For Shingo to be able to bare and show his leadership, to be one character who can look like a real leader?
FYI, I've always wonder how can Isami Kondou himself be the leader of Shinsengumi. I mean, in books and comics itselves...i never can believe Isami Kondou is a leader of Shinsengumi, he really dont have the charm for it....as most of the time, it seems Hijikata who decides evrything.
Yeah, just realized, that no wonder Shingo cannot act and look like a leader of the big group. Coz Isami Kondou the character himself, too, doesnt really looked like a leader, anyway....or, at least, perhaps he IS a good leader...just it doesnt show enuff, since he is such a nice and kind-hearted man x)
so i think Shingo has done his best....recalling on how much his acting stands out in other dramas like Miseinen, Yomigaeru Kinro, Hito ni Yasashiku...but how he didnt really stands out in Shinsengumi....makes me wonder..... _________________

here's an interesting article for fans of the "shinsengumi" series that talks about the popularity of the show in Japan and how it's reviving and increasing interest and tourism to the historical sights mentioned in the "Shinsengumi travels" section at the end throughout Tokyo. In fact, they even held a festival that the article talks about just for people to go around the city and see all the sights and visit where all the characters went in the show. They're also making a whole lot of money off of merchandise based on the series, such as the shinsengumi uniforms worn by kondo and the other's and candies, towels, sake, etc.
